"Horror Hospital" is one of many mad scientist movies, but it has that funky and often cheezy 70's charm to set it apart from the others. If there is one word to describe a horror movie from that decade, it would have to be adventurous. In those days, filmmakers didn't have much inhibition for including nutty ideas like biker henchmen on cluncky motorcycles labeled "Storm 1" and "Storm 2" or cars with retractable blades to decapitate runaways and even retractable baskets to catch the lopped heads! It even has a wily, gravedigging dwarf who likes to say "Don't forget to brush your teeth..." and a young Mick Jagger-lookalike as the protagonist. Oddly enough, British actor Michael Gough (perhaps best known for his role as Alfred in four Batman movies) is thrown into the mix as well. Although his relatively reserved performance contrasts all the whackier elements in the movie, he still fits in like a glove as the mad scientist, partially because of his appropriately calculated manner and partially because he looks sinister with his bushy eyebrows and pale complexion. Gough is the best to be found in "Horror Hospital", but there's also a fair amount of gratuities to satisfy most of the gorehounds and those who just need to see some nudity. As for the plot, it starts off reasonably well but begins to unravel in the middle until there's very little left for the chaotic ending. The bottom line: "Horror Hospital" is an adequate B-movie, recommended only if you're in the mood for something whacky. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 11 or 12 dots points to an essential item in a horror video collection. Even the dung beetles would be repelled by a movie rated with one or no dots. ** |
