Although "The Hunger" involves vampirism and a fair amount of bloodshed, it downplays the horror and dabbles into other genres. The result is something like 35% horror/40% romance/25% sci-fi. There are enough horrific things appearing in this movie for it to be properly categorized under horror, but most fans of the genre will find it rather mild and sluggishly-paced. Granted, watching a lab monkey and David Bowie age 200 years in a matter of minutes is a bit unsettling, but aside from the rapid agings and a few bloody scenes, not much will crop up to scare you. The movie does benefit from some stylish directing, a cold, somewhat gothic atmosphere, and an excellent soundtrack (Bauhaus, a great goth-rock band, even makes an appearance at the beginning, and appropriately enough for a vampire flick, they play "Bela Lugosi's Dead"). Catherine Deneuve is well-cast as a classy vampiress who eventually tries to start a lesbian relationship with Susan Sarandon's character, but "The Hunger" devotes too much time on little things while not spending enough time patching up holes in the convoluted plot. There seems to be some sub-plots that really don't go anywhere, such as the monkey experiments, and the little things just slow the movie down. The bottom line: While "The Hunger" is a very stylish film, there isn't enough to satisfy the craving for horror. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 11 or 12 dots points to an essential item in a horror video collection. Even the dung beetles would be repelled by a movie rated with one or no dots. ** |
