Clint Howard is completely over-the-top as the homicidal ice cream vendor, but his performance is appropriate since the plot is every bit as nutty. Sometimes, it gets a little too nutty for its own good. "Ice Cream Man" starts off well enough with Clint killing children and selling Rocky Road with eyeballs for marshmallows. However, the movie flies out of control once Jan-Michael Vincent and Lee Majors II investigate the nefarious ice cream man's background at the Wishing Well mental institution, where the doctors are crazier than the patients. From there, it becomes one big chaotic mess. Fortunately, there are some great gross-out and dark-humored moments appearing throughout the movie. Near the end, Clint puts on a wicked puppet show with some missing heads. Interestingly enough, this movie has a low budget of $2 million, yet the cast includes quite a few well-known celebrities. Normally, a movie with a budget of less than $3 million would just have a bunch of relatively unknown actors. However, along with the actors mentioned earlier, "Ice Cream Man" has Olivia Hussey, David Warner, Steve Garvey, and Doug Llewelyn in it! Overall, it isn't such a bad horror film, but its appeal leans mostly toward people who enjoy zany, gross-out low-budget flicks. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots, the better it is. 11 or 12 dots indicates a masterpiece worth "throwing into the VCR" while one or no dots means it's a "disasterpiece" definitely worth "throwing against the wall." ** |
