The writer of "Jugular Wine: A Vampire Odyssey" must have indulged in too much wine while developing the story. The movie moves as though it is in a drunken stupor, partially because the protagonist feels disoriented and partially because the plot is shabbily put together. There are several sub-plots that ultimately go nowhere and only serve to propel the main plot of hunting down the evil vampire Legion. For instance, the protagonist wants to find a vampire expert, but the search quickly gets buried in a bunch of remotely related events before the expert is mentioned again. Much later on in a ham-handed sort of way, a vampire informs the protagonist that this expert is actually a Japanese vampire who got killed in the beginning of the movie. By then, who cares anymore?! It's as if someone read an early version of the script and asked the writer, "Hey, what happened to that vampire expert you had near the beginning?" And then the writer replies, "Oops. Forgot all about that. Let me get a pencil, and I'll just write in her fate somewhere." It's sort of like putting a Band-Aid on a shotgun wound. It just doesn't work. Bad acting and even worse dialogue doesn't exactly help the story either. However, I must give credit to the artistic visuals; unfortunately, they aren't going to cover up for a haphazardly-written script. Overall, "Jugular Wine" is a mediocre vampire movie with quite a bit of style but very little substance. Rent at your own risk. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots, the better the movie. A dozen dots is as good as they get, while one or no dots accounts for what can euphemistically be labeled "bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment." ** |
