This directorial debut for Wes Craven has some genuinely provocative moments, particularly the part where a couple teenage girls are kidnapped by a trio of sadists and forced to do humiliating things out in the woods. Normally, horror villains just kill their victims and maybe add insult to injury by quipping out an epitaph, but the ones in this movie get gratification by watching a victim straining to wet her pants first. Meanwhile, it's filmed somewhat like a documentary, which adds a sense of realism and compounds the brutality of the movie. However, all of this is undermined by misconceived comic relief. Although "The Left House on the Left" claims to be based on a true story, it's hard to believe that cops would actually let their own cars run out of gas and later try to hitch a ride on the roof of a chicken truck! The villains commit a lot of ridiculous blunders themselves, which begs the question if their mistakes are due to artistic licensing rather than a reenactment of a true crime gone awry. Also, the soundtrack is inappropriately upbeat. The lyrics may match what is happening on screen, but why on Earth are they playing banjos and kazoos when a couple girls are about to be raped? That is so wrong... The bottom line: "Last House on the Left" ranks about average overall, and it would have been more effective if Craven phased out the comic relief and some of the incredibly stupid mistakes made by several characters. |
