A British haunted-house movie from 1973, "The Legend of Hell House" explores the familiar situation where parapsychologists investigate a haunted house. Like a lot of other British movies, "The Legend of Hell House" is elegant and reserved. In fact, it's reserved to the point that it's rated PG. You're not going to see much gore or violence in this film, mostly just a lot of eerie supernatural activity. Each of the characters investigating the paranormal activity specializes in a different branch of parapsychology (one is a mental medium; one is a physical medium, and another is a hard-nosed scientist who is only interested in gathering physical evidence of ghosts), and the movie does a decent job of developing conflict between the different parapsycholists since none of them completely buy each other's specialty. Also, the house here has the distinction of not having any windows. All in all, this is a very good haunted house movie; however, the ending is somewhat of a letdown (I'd elaborate but I don't want to give it away). |
