Being directed by Ken Russell, who is known for his strange and sexual movies (i.e. "Tommy" and "Crimes of Passion"), it's hardly a surprise that "The Lair of the White Worm" is one of the most bizarre horror movies out there, and its more surreal moments tend to appear without any warning. One second you see a girl touching a silver crucifix, the next second you see a vivid hallucination sequence with Roman soldiers, angels, monsters, fluorescent clouds and copious amounts of blood. There are quite a few erotic moments as well, for the villain is on the prowl for virgin sacrifices and has a little fun with them before they're killed. There is a bit of a spoofy side to "The Lair of the White Worm", though the elegant visuals and the understated acting from the British cast (which includes Hugh Grant) makes the spoofiness rather subtle. In one part, one of the characters is unknowingly eating pickled earthworms, and in another, monsters are being snake-charmed with bagpipe music! The few problems I have with this interesting film are the gabby parts and the rather inconclusive ending, but all in all, this is a very good, adventurous choice for horror fans to watch. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 11 or 12 dots indicates a real wonder while one or no dots indicates a real blunder.** |
