"Man Bites Dog"--hmmm...that sounds like a comedy. It is, though you definitely need a macabre sense of humor to enjoy it. If you chuckle over the idea of someone removing a dead person's pants so he can see how big the stiff's penis is, then this movie is for you. It has some gory parts (one victim is thoroughly gutted out like a fish--it looks as though the victim exploded from inside), and the NC-17 rating should be a testament to the film's brutality. Thus, there should be no question about "Man Bites Dog" fitting within the horror genre. Even so, it has a couple glaring drawbacks, and not every horror fan is necessarily going to enjoy this movie. There are some gabby parts that could have been left out (especially in the middle). All of the conversations, by the way, are in French, and the English subtitles are often very difficult to read since they are sometimes camouflaged by the movie scenes. This contrast problem is inevitable when you have a black & white movie with white subtitles! Nevertheless, this is a fairly good film to watch if you're in an adventurous mood and you have the stomach for it. |
