"Maximum Overdrive" is the first and probably the last movie directed by Stephen King. While I like the idea of novelists having control over movies based on their stories, it's best to leave the direction to someone with filming experience. Strangely enough, the general feel of the movie version is quite different from the original story, even though the author is directing the movie. I would have figured that he would have stayed true to the story's darker, more somber nature. Perhaps King has decided to do something a little different and intentionally defy expectations. Perhaps he has chosen to make a campy movie since they demand less skill from the director than serious movies do. Whatever the reason for creating a campy flick from a relatively serious story, here is the viewing experience of "Maximum Overdrive": The first half of the movie is silly but moderately entertaining. The steamroller flattening one of the kids on the baseball field is a good dark-humored moment, and it is amusing to see Stephen King go to an ATM which keeps calling him an a$$hole. The second half, however, is just plain stupid. After a few minutes of big-rigs driving around in circles, it gets tiresome very quickly. It doesn't end on a good note either since all we get is a ham-handed explanation about a U.F.O. and the comet. The bottom line: "Maximum Overdrive" is alright as a B-movie, at least until the second half begins. |
