"Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge" holds the distinction of being the last Elm Street offering before Freddy Kruger begins to exhibit comedic tendencies. Beyond that, there isn't much to distinguish this film from the rest within the horror genre. Admittedly, there are a few wildly imaginative--and enjoyable--dream-like sequences, such as the killer parrot, the melting vinyl record, and the coach being dragged into the shower room by jump rope and then mercilessly flogged by a towel! However, the bulk of the movie is forgettable and barely manages to stretch a skimpy story out to nearly 90 minutes. The plot is unsubstantial, and this feature-length film might have worked better as a 20-minute segment of a horror anthology (especially if you rename the story and substitute Freddy with another villain). While not a terrible opus, it isn't terribly great either, and thus Freddy's serious persona ends on a rather ambivalent note. Take it or leave it. |
