PUPPET MASTER

Among the killer doll movies, "Puppet Master" stands out as an oddity. You won't find too many movies which take place at Bodega Bay, and the characters are an unusual bunch, particularly the white witch who carries a dead dog around as a pet. Geezer extraordinare William Hickey even appears here, though he doesn't get to do very much. Some of the killer puppets have some interesting abilities, especially Leech Woman, who spews large leeches into people's throats. If a movie is this different, then it has to be a masterpiece, right? Not quite. The eccentric plot isn't particularly captivating or easy to follow, and it takes a while before the puppets start wreaking havoc. Nevertheless, the puppet animation is nifty for its time, and the movie does score points for originality.

The bottom line: "Puppet Master" is perhaps a bit too unusual for its own good, but it's still fairly good overall.
