A zany spoof/homage of campy horror films from the 50's and earlier, "Popcorn" takes just about every B-movie element imaginable--such as gigantic bugs and flamboyant madmen--and blends it all together in one movie. While it is nice that films try to be this ambitious, the results are almost invariably hit-and-miss affairs, and "Popcorn" is no exception. Some ideas, such as the aggressive marquee sign attacking Jill Schoelen with letters, are misconceived while others, such as original showings of B-movie spoofs like "Attack of the Giant Mosquitos", work nicely. While the spoofing is amusing enough, the movie's biggest selling point (aside from Jill Schoelen's good looks) is probably an energetic performance by Tom Villard. He seems to be having fun with his role, and some of that enthausiasm can spill over into the viewing experience. The movie does fly a bit out of control at times (particularly toward the end), but it's all in good fun. The bottom line: "Popcorn" isn't half-bad, especially if you're in an off-the-wall mood. |
