Along the seemingly endless stream of thrillers involving rogue policemen comes "Psycho Cop", though this one has the familiar flavor of Friday the 13th movies. This means teenagers are alone in the country and being killed one by one out in the woods. While the movie hasn't the most original plot, it does get credit for aggressively pursuing scares through paranoia. At first, it works well when the teenagers might have committed a moving violation and the cop may or may not have noticed it, but it all goes overboard once the numerous conspiracy theories kick in. Fortunately, the villain--played with gusto by Bobby Ray Shafer--is fun to watch, and he looks quite homicidal with his crazed stare and evil grin. Many antagonists from horror movies are apt to give out sly one-liners after they kill someone, but Shafer takes the cake. He never runs out of taunts and epitaphs while hunting down his victims. It's too bad they had to stick it to him in the end with some awful execution (I'll try not to spoil the ending with the details, but it does look ridiculous). The bottom line: "Psycho Cop" is an okay horror movie, on a par with the better Friday the 13th films. |
