Contrary to what the title suggests, "Summer Camp Nightmare" is not really a horror movie, even though you might find it in the horror section. Instead, it's a drama a la Lord of the Flies. After an autocratic counselor is accidentally killed, many of the campers revert to savagery and pose a serious problem to those who remain civilized. This obviously parallels the plot of Lord of the Flies where some of its youngsters become savages and eventually try to kill all of the other kids. The difference here is that Lord of the Flies unfolds this sort of situation much more convincingly. The first half of "Summer Camp Nightmare" is quite decent, as it handles the movie's strongest point: the conflict between the campers and the strict counselor. Once the conflict is "resolved" in the second half, however, the movie loses its credibility and goes downhill. The bottom line: "Summer Camp Nightmare" is promising at first but ultimately mediocre, and don't be fooled into thinking it's a slasher flick like "Friday the 13th". |
