Every so often there comes a sequel that is only obliquely related to its predecessors, and "Silent Night, Deadly Night 4" can be counted as one of them. Unlike the previous three in the series, the movie is not centered on the Santa Claus killer but rather a murder mystery involving witchcraft. Sure, the Santa Claus killer is still there and promisingly enough, perennially creepy Clint Howard assumes the role, but unfortunately, the killer is not quite as bloodthirsty as he is in the previous Silent Night, Deadly Night films and takes a back seat to a sect of insect-mongering witches. However, this is not entirely disappointing since director Brian Yuzna thoroughly exploits insects as a source of fear and disgust, and there is one spaghetti-hallucination scene that will almost surely make you toss your Top Ramen. As far as plots and technical skills go, this is the most polished in the Silent Night, Deadly Night series, though the odd story and the snowless Southern California setting don't lend much to the expected theme of a Christmastime massacre. The bottom line: Treated as a stand alone horror movie, "Silent Night, Deadly Night 4--Initiation" is decent, though it may disappoint fans hoping to see more of the Santa Claus killer. |

** NOTE: The more dots, the better it is. 12 dots indicates a masterpiece while no dots means it's about as enjoyable as scrapping poop from an overloaded septic tank. ** |
