"Scream 2" mostly starts out as a parody of the horror genre with its portrayal of hard-core horror fans as knife-wielding fanatics and its discussion of sequels being inferior to the originals. In a way, this satirization is all prophetic because (1) the killer is a movie buff and (2) this movie turns out to be inferior to the original "Scream". There are some good isolated moments such as Sarah Michelle Gellar's character being stalked and the girls crawling their way out of a car while the killer is inside. Otherwise, there is not much to recommend about this movie. The ghostfaced killer is much less interesting this time around, and "Scream 2" lacks the intensity of its predecessor. The bottom line: A self-conscious but average horror flick that typifies the detrimental effects of sequelization. |
