SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK

Judging from the title, "Slaughterhouse Rock" sounds like either a gory musical or some movie starring a rock band who must fight the forces of evil (as in "Rock 'N Roll Nightmare" or "Rocktober Blood"). Actually, neither description is accurate. Instead, "Slaughterhouse Rock" is a campy film about a college student named Alex who experiences nightmares that sort of come true, thanks to a demon from Alcatraz. Of course, Alex and his friends take a boat to Alcatraz and wind up suffering from an attrition problem (a demonic possession, a rape, and, of course, a bunch of deaths). There are a lot of wise cracks and smart-aleck remarks in the script, which help make the movie more watchable, and interestingly enough, Devo plays music for the entire soundtrack! However, "Slaughterhouse Rock" gets pretty over-the-top once Alex meets the spirit--played my MTV's Toni Basil--who is responsible for unleashing the demon. Only schlock from the '80s could possibly have a woman running around in a leopard fur coat and tight, tiger-striped pants while intentionally fooling around with demonic remains, and needless to say, that is exactly what you get for one of the scenes. The movie gets increasingly difficult to follow, partially because some characters either come back from the dead or have out of body experiences and partially because the plot is just silly. Overall, "Slaughterhouse Rock" ranks as a fair horror movie geared to those looking for some late-night, mindless fun.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

6 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 9-12 dots is the equivalent of two thumbs up while 3 dots or less means two thumbs up the ass. **
