The movie reviewed here is definitely not the Disney version. It is much more gothic, and Snow White herself is not always sugar and spice and everything nice. In fact, she is quite a brat for the first half of the movie. The evil queen (played to perfection by Sigourney Weaver) does not start out as a pathologically envious person either. Only after she has a miscarriage does she lose her mind and turn to evil. Weaver is scary in this movie and gives new meaning to "Hell hath no fury but a woman's scorn." She casts some really wicked spells, such as causing a large spider to crawl out of a man's wound. There is a moment of dark humor when Weaver gets the pig's heart and smears it all over her body, believing that she is violating the remains of Snow White in the worst way possible. The rest of the slaughtered pig ends up on the dinner table, and the evil queen indulges in her Dahmer-anian or Gein-ish tendencies by savoring every bite of what seems to be Snow White. It's definitely a far cry from the Disney material, but that does not mean it isn't an enjoyable film. It's actually one of the better horror movies, but it might disappoint those who are expecting a live action remake of the animated classic. My only quibbles to the movie are the rather anticlimatic ending (not to be revealed here) and the fact that the apple-peddling hag looks like Fire Marshall Bill from In Living Color, an appearance that is difficult to take seriously. |
