SORCERESS (1994)

Quite often when the title involves a female monster or supernatural entity, the movie turns out to be a form of soft-core pornography, and "Sorceress" follows suit with plenty of breast rubbing, butt licking, and promises of menage-a-trois action. Of course, all of this usually comes at the price of a rather stupid script and abysmal acting, and you can safely bet that this movie follows suit again, though Linda Blair is satisfactory as the vengeful witch in this picture. For some reason, director Jim Wynorski has the atavistic habit of putting most of the nude scenes toward the first half and then unfolding with the story in the second half (it is especially apparent in this movie and "Bare Wench Project"). Up until the middle, there are various sexual encounters popping up every five minutes or so, and the plot--along with horror of any kind--takes a back seat to all the nudity. After that, the girls tend to keep their clothes on, and the plot comes into the foreground. Unfortunately, the movie falters a bit from there because there is less of the gratuitous elements to make up for the weak plot, which relies mostly on cheezy Satanic rituals to categorize itself as horror. At the end of the downward spiral, "Sorceress" concludes inconclusively with the old "it's only a dream, or is it???" spiel. Granted, it works fine in a movie like "Phantasm" where it's consistent with the bizarre, nightmarish plot, but what's the point of denying the sexual scenes ever happening in "Sorceress"?

The bottom line: "Sorceress" is fairly watchable mostly because of the nude scenes, but it barely qualifies as a horror movie.

OVERALL RATING

6 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 12 is a masterpiece. One or no dots is also a masterpiece, if you consider poop to be a gourmet ingredient.**
