It's pretty surprising that "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and this sequel are both directed by Tobe Hooper. "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is much more comedic, almost to the point of being a satire of its predecessor. When you have a villain who talks about his hemorrhoid problem going away after getting his crotch sawn up, you know the movie is not taking itself seriously. It stars Dennis Hopper, whose thespian qualities are over-the-top (as usual). It's especially apparent once he starts spewing religious lines and sawing up walls at random. However, Hopper blends in well since the film itself is also pretty over-the-top. While the movie lacks the seriousness of the original, it compensates somewhat with extra mayhem and gore. One person literally gets skinned alive, and the violence is consistent throughout. Even with the added violence, it doesn't measure up to the more realistic original, where the madness of Leatherface & Co. is meant to be disturbing, not a mere prop for dark comedy. Leatherface is based on a real-life serial killer (Ed Gein), and naturally he belongs in a realistic movie more than anything else. The bottom line: This is a reasonably amusing one to watch, but it is not quite up to par with the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots, the better the movie. A dozen dots is as good as they get, while one or no dots accounts for what can euphemistically be labeled "bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment." ** |
