This direct-to-video is based on a comic book, and it feels like it, given the noticably choreographed fight scenes and the hokey dialogue. Although "Vampirella" is classified as a horror movie, it's no scarier than "Batman & Robin" or "Captain America". I guess it qualifies as horror simply because it involves vampires, even though they come from a planet called Drakulon. It's funny when they turn into bats because they fly at supersonic speeds without ever flapping their wings. I could easily acheive the same effect by just making the mouse cursor into the shape of the bat and move it around really fast on the monitor! While Talisa Soto does make a pretty vampiress, she fails to convey the treacherously seductive side of vampires, and her budding relationship with Van Hellsing's son lacks any genuine chemistry. On top of all this, Vlad is wearing hair extensions to disguise himself as a lame-ass glam rocker! It looks like vampire mythology has possibly sunk to a new low, and needless to say, you would do well to avoid this mediocre direct-to-video rendition. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots, the better the movie. A dozen dots is as good as they get, while one or no dots accounts for what can euphemistically be labeled "bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment." ** |
