1935 proved to be another milestone in Clark's life. He and Ria separated, "Mutiny On The Bounty"brought him his second Academy Award nomination, and he had a torrid affair with actress Loretta Young while filming "Call Of The Wild". Their affair produced a daughter that both he and Young never publicly recognized as their own. He continued to make an average of two films a year and in 1939 he reluctantly accepted the role of Rhett Butler in "Gone With The Wind"Shortly after accepting the role he married actress Carole Lombard. This was Clark's third marriage but, unlike the two previous, it was the first time that he married for love. He had met his match with Carole and was truly happy.

Gone With The Wind brought him his third, and final, Academy Award nomination and the film went on to receive a record ten Oscars including Best Picture. He was the undisputed "King Of Hollywood". But his happiness would be short-lived.
In January 1942, just shy of their 3rd Wedding Anniversary, Carole Lombard was killed in a plane crash coming back from a War Bond selling tour. Clark was devastated and six months after her death he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a buck private. He flew five bombing missions over Germany and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. In 1944 he was promoted to Major and in June he was discharged.

In 1945, after two years away from Hollywood, he starred opposite Greer Garson in "Adventure".It wasn't a box office hit by Gable standards and he never recaptured the success that he enjoyed prior to Carole's death. In 1949, he married for the fourth time to Lady Sylvia Ashley. Three weeks later Gable knew that he had made a mistake and in 1951 after eighteen months of marriage they parted ways. Once again, Clark found himself a bachelor at the age of 50.

He continued to make, on average, two films a year and in July of 1955 he married for the fifth and final time to Kay Spreckles. She gave Clark what he had always longed for, a family. She had two children from a previous marriage and Clark doted on them. But he desperately wanted a child of his own. In 1960, he started production on what would be his final film "The Misfits".Midway through filming he found out that Kay was pregnant. He was so excited at the prospect of finally having his own child that that's all he talked about. Unfortunately, Clark Gable never lived to see the birth of his only son John Clark Gable. He died of a heart attack on November 16, 1960, just two weeks after completing "The Misfits".
