Astrid Hadad and her accomplished band Los Tarzanes, who performed at the Colony Theater Tuesday night to an enthusiastic full house. A Mexican singer and post-modern cabaret diva, Hadad whips up a dizzying musical, visual, verbal and cultural melange. She's a onewoman syncretic carnival with - attitude. Hadad writes and sings mostly classic Mexican styles like rancheras, but takes their extravagant sentiments way over the top with lyrics like 'You beat me so hard last night, yet I'm still here.' Every wiggle and bit of onstage patter comments on sexist or culturally paternalistic attitudes. Her costumes are an integral part of the fun; she entered in a dress covered with Day of the Dead skulls and a huge spray of agave cactus on her back, because "the air in Mexico City is so bad you have to carry your own plants around with you."
