Leukemia
A disease of the parts of the body that make blood. In Leukemia, the body makes too many abnormal white blood cells, causing:

  1. Infections - Leukemic cells lack the infection-fighting ability of normal white blood cells
  2. Anemia - production of red blood cells drops as leukemic cells flood the system
  3. Excessive bleeding - clotting ability decreases as number of platelets(tiny disks needed for clotting) drops.

Lymphoma
The general term for certain types of cancer. In Lymphoma, cancer develops in the Lymphatic System. The Lymphatic System:

  • is a key part of the immune system--the body's defense against infection
  • runs throughout the whole body.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and Hodgkin's disease, as well as to improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Our goal is to significantly accelerate cures for leukemia and its related cancers, and be the recognized leader in the fight against these diseases. The Society supports five major programs - research, patient services, public and professional education, and community services. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has allocated more than $161 million to reserach, supporting individual medical investigators as they continue their studies to advance the knowledge of leukemia and related cancers and ultimately cure these diseases.

What I will be doing to help The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
On June 3, 2001 I will be running in a 26.2 mile marathon. Until then, I will be going through a 4-month training program along with other Team in Training participants. My goal is to raise at least $3500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Why should I support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?

  • It is estimated that Leukemia and its related cancers strike some 102,200 Americans each year and kill 56,200. These totals account for about 8% of the new cases of, and deaths from malignant diseases in the United States.
  • Every week, there are 1,900 new cases of leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma diagnosed in this country.
  • Every week, appoximately 1,100 Americans die of leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma.
  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-sponsored research has been the catalyst for effective treatments of Hodgkin's disease, lymphoma, and other common kinds of cancers, including breast and lung cancer. Now on the threshold of a new era, the hope is that with accelerated funding for research, leukemia and related cancers will be curable early in the next century.
  • The research is working. Twenty-five years ago, only 5% of children diagnosed with leukemia survived. Today, 79% of children with leukemia and 76% of those with Hodgkin's disease will live, thanks to the research funded by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society projects such as Team in Training.

The Team In Training Program.

  • This year, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will train an estimated 24,000 runners, walkers, cyclists, and triathletes to participate in a marathon, century ride, or triathlon in our most successful fundraising program nationwide - Team in Training. During its history, the Team in Training program has experienced tremendous growth, from raising $1.3 million in 1993 to raising $72 million in 2000.
  • Team in Training offers runners, walkers, and cyclists of all fitness abilities a three-to-five-month comprehensive training program under the guidance of professional coaches. In return for professional training with a team and travel to marathon and century sites, the participants raise valuable funds in the fight against leukemia and its related cancers.
  • Each member of our team paricipated in honor of a child or adult affected by leukemia, lymphoma, or one of the blood-related cancers. Completing a marathon, centruy ride, or triathlon is a celebration of human spirit, physical ability, and mental endurance. For members of Team in Training, it is also a celebration of life.
