The use of the Internet is in its relative infancy. In the words of counsel, it is 'an unruly beast.' Or so it will certainly become without a foundation of good-neighbor commercial principles. -- Justice Janet M. Wilson of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto, Canada |
Netiquette
Please, know the protocol before you post to newsgroups or mailing lists. Any one of the first three resources listed below will gave you a basic understanding of Netiquette.- The Net: User Guidelines and Netiquette by Arlene Rinaldi

Web Design Usability
I listed this before HTML Basics intentionally. I suggest that novices get a grounding in usability first and HTML second.
- Study: Consumers Want Fast Pages, Not Rich Media by Ted Kemp: E-retail and content sites that ensure faster page load-times and provide more product information retain customers better than sites that implement more expensive technologies, such as rich media content or mobile commerce applications, according to research firm Jupiter Media Metrix.
- Net Mechanic: Usability Testing
- Jakob Nielsen Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity New Riders Publishing, Indianapolis, 2000. (perhaps the best book available on web design usability and certainly one of the best.)
- Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/
- Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox: Field Studies Done Right: Fast and Observational (January 20, 2002)
- NetMechanic Design Tip: Writing For The Web: In school, you learned to write documents that were formal, rigidly structured, and relatively impersonal. While it still works in many situations, that style won't earn you any A's from Web site visitors. When you're creating text for your Web site, remember the "Three S" rule: keep it Simple, Succinct, and Scannable.
