Otto, caretaker in Father Logan's church, dresses as a priest and kills a
lawyer in order to rob his house. The dead lawyer was blackmailing Father
Logan for a relationship the priest had with a young lady, now a politician's
wife.
The killer confesses his guilt to Father Logan who is suspected of the murder.
The priest doesn't want the lady to be involved with the scandal, but the truth
is soon discovered; however there is not sufficient proof against Father Logan
and he is absolved.
He cannot escape from the scandal. All the people in the town are against him
because they think he is guilty. When she looks at the priest and she sees him
suffering, Alma, Otto's wife, is forced to tell the truth about her husband who
then kills her with a shot gun. Police kills the murderer and Father Logan
absolves him before he dies.

Although Hitchcock liked this story, it was not a great success: perhaps the
audience and critics missed the great suspense and the strong atmosphere
which usually were in the director's movies.
