Gloria  (4:13)
     - The hit track off of this album, and certainly one of the most memorable.  A big change happened for this album, probably as the band experimented with different types of music.  As such, all the songs on this album are very diverse, unlike most of Boy.  This song leads off with Edge playing a far more complicated riff on his guitar than "I Will Follow".  It's a very catchy song.  You're probably wondering what they're saying in the chorus, and unless you know a bit of Latin, you won't know it immediately.  Gloria, in te domine translates to 'Glory, in your dominion' although with Latin the phrase generally implies 'Glory be God, in the Lord's Dominion'.  Gloria, exultate translates into 'Glory and exultation' or possibly 'Glory to the exulted one'.  Yes, this song is about God, not a woman named Gloria.  As a final note, it sounds like they dropped something like a glass bottle in the studio while recording this song, during Adam's solo.

I try to sing this song
I...I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet
I try, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete

Gloria...in te domine
Gloria...exultate
Gloria...Gloria
Oh Lord, loosen my lips

I try to sing this song
I...I try to get in
But I can't find the door
The door is open
You're standing there
You let me in

Gloria...in te domine
Gloria...exultate
Oh Lord, if I had anything
Anything at all
I'd give it to you
I'd give it to you

Gloria...Gloria...

I Fall Down  (3:40)
     - Another great song, but do I ever feel sorry for the guy this song is about!  First his girl blows up at him, then she leaves him, then something happens and now she's dying!  Each time, this poor guy finds a way of dealing with it, only to be knocked down again.  Anyway, this song is full of emotion and Edge's piano skills, featured prominently for the very first time.  In case you didn't know The Edge can play many instruments, the piano one of them.

Julie says
"John I'm getting nowhere
I wrote this letter
Hope to get to someplace soon
I want to get up
When I wake up
But when I get up
I fall down"

Julie wake up
Julie tell the story
You wrote the letter
Said you were gonna get there someday
Gonna walk in the sun
And the wind and the rain
Never walk back again

Now you fall down
You're falling down
You fall down
You fall down

Julie say something
Julie say you're sorry
You're gonna get better
You better not leave me here anyway

I want to get up
When you wake up
When I get up

I fall down
When I'm falling down
I fall down
I broke myself

I fall
I fall down
I'm falling down
I fall down
When you fall down
When I'm falling down
Is when you're falling down
When you fall down
I fall down
I fall down...

I Threw A Brick Through A Window  (4:55)
     - Given that U2 is from Ireland, it should come as no surprise that they would sing a song about terrorism.  The IRA had been plaguing the Irish cities and their influence was everywhere.  Yet that was a small sample of some of the atrocities that the Irish people had to live with.  This song details how a young man finds a sense of family in a terrorist gang, even though he knows what he's doing is wrong.  It plagues him until one day he decides he has to leave.  Musically, the song is somewhat bland, but lyrically it is very full of emotion (I say that a lot), and is very poetic.  Also listen for whenever Bono says "Brother".  A cool echo effect >follows each time, which adds to the whole sound of the song.

I was talking
I was talking to myself
Somebody else
Talk talk talking
I couldn't hear a word
A word you said

He was my brother
I said there was no other
Way out of here
Be my brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out

I was walking
I was walking into walls
I'm back again
I just keep walking
I walk into a window
To see myself
And my reflection
When I thought about it
My direction
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

No one...no one is blinder
Than he who will not see
No one...no one is blinder
Than me

I was talking
I was talking in my sleep
I can't stop talking
I'm talking to you
It's up to you

Be my brother
There is another way out of here
In my brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out
Gotta get out of here

Rejoice  (3:37)
     - Although "Gloria" was the hit off of this album, this song is remembered far more.  I have read that people still tell Bono one of their alltime fav lyric is I can't change the world, but I can change the world in me.  But I love the way this song starts, with Edge's urgent playing.  When Bono starts singing, it almost sounds like his voice is being fed through a microphone on location, like a news broadcast.  Good song.

It's falling, it's falling
And outside the buildings
Are tumbling down
And inside a child on the ground
Says he'd do it again

And what am I to do
What in the world am I to say
There's nothing else to do
He says he'll change the world someday
I rejoice

This morning I fell out of bed
When I woke up to what he has said
Everything's crazy
But I'm too lazy to lie

And what am I to do
Just tell me what am I supposed to say
I can't change the world
But I can change the world in me
If I rejoice
Rejoice...

And what am I to do
Just tell me what am I supposed to say
I can't change the world
But I can change the world in me
If I rejoice

I don't know what to change
Rejoice...

Fire  (3:50)
     - Upon hearing this song, or reading the lyrics, most people have no idea what it's about.  Well, the song's basically about the end of the world according to Revelation in the Bible.  Anyway, the chorus in the song is probably the best, and the whole song is very dark which matches the rest of the album.  This is my favourite song on the album.

Falling falling
The sun is burning black
Falling falling
It's beating on my back
With a fire
With a fire

Falling falling
The moon is running red
Falling falling
It's pulling me instead
With a fire
Fire

But there's a fire inside
When I'm falling over
There's a fire in me
When I call out
I built a fire
I'm going home

Falling falling
The stars are falling down
Falling falling
They knock me to the ground
With a fire
Fire

But there's a fire inside
When I'm falling over
There's a fire in me
When I call out
There's a fire inside
When I'm falling over
I feel the fire
I'm going home

Tomorrow  (4:47)
     - There are two themes to this song.  First, the second coming of Jesus, but this is a very minor point in the song.  The main point is about Bono's mom, and her death.  The black car is probably the funeral car, or something like that.  The destruction of his house may not actually be literal, but is about the state of Bono's mind and emotions being torn apart.  A good song overall. It really picks up, but starts slow with a Celtic theme to it.  And I'm sorry, but no matter how many times I play the beginning of the song, I can't understand what Bono's saying to the band.

Won't you come back tomorrow
Won't you come back tomorrow
Won't you come back tomorrow
Can I sleep tonight

Outside
Somebody's outside
Somebody's knocking at the door
There's a black car parked
At the side of the road
Don't go to the door
Don't go to the door

I'm going out
I'm going outside mother
I'm going out there

Won't you be back tomorrow
Won't you be back tomorrow
Will you be back tomorrow

Who broke the window
Who broke down the door
Who tore the curtain
And who was He for
Who healed the wounds
Who heals the scars
Open the door
Open the door

Won't you come back tomorrow
Won't you be back tomorrow
Will you be back tomorrow
Can I sleep tonight

Cause I want you...I...I want you...
I really...I...I want...I...I...
I want you to be back tomorrow
I want you to be back tomorrow
Will you be back tomorrow

Won't you be back tomorrow
Won't you be back tomorrow
Will you be back tomorrow
Open up, open up
To the lamb of God
To the love of he who made
The blind to see
He's coming back
He's coming back
I believe it
Jesus coming

I'm gonna be there
I'm gonna be there mother
I'm gonna be there mother
I'm going out there
And you're gonna be there...

October  (2:22)
     - A very short song, being just piano and Bono singing the last bit.  U2 hasn't done a song in this style since, which is good otherwise they'd be pretty depressing.  It's a great song, don't get me wrong, but only if you have it rarely, as they've done.

October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care

October
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on...and on...

With A Shout  (4:03)
     - Another one of my favourites on the album.  It seems to be about Joshua outside of Jericho, shouting and blowing horms, causing the walls of Jericho to fall so the Israelites could return to Jerusalem.  Very uplifting song.

Oh, and where do we go
Where do we go from here
Where to go
To the side of a hill
Blood was spilt
We were still looking
At each other

Oh, we're goin' back there
Jerusalem Jerusalem

Shout, shout
With a shout, shout it out
Shout...shout it out...

I wanna go
To the foot of the messiah
To the foot of he who made me see
To the side of a hill
Where we were still
We were filled
With our love

We're gonna be there again
Jerusalem Jerusalem

Shout, shout
With a shout
Shout...
With a shout

Stranger In A Strange Land  (3:56)
     - This song's okay, but Adam must have had a blast playing it.  It's a song where his bass is more prominent than The Edge's guitar.  It's a good bass riff too, but overall the song is kind of boring.  However, the bridge is very stiring (And I wish you were here).  That makes up for the rest of the song for sure.

Stranger
Stranger in a strange land
He looked at me like I
Was the one who should run

We asked him to smile for a photograph
Waited a while to see if we could
Make him laugh

A soldier asked for a cigarette
His smiling face I can't forget
He looked like you across the street
But that's a long way here

And I wish you were here
And I wish you were here

Stranger
A stranger in a strange land
He looked at me like I
Was the one who should run

I watched as he watched us
Get back on the bus
I watched the way it was
The way it was when he was with us

And I really don't mind
Sleeping on the floor
But I couldn't sleep after what I saw
I wrote this letter to tell you
The way I feel

I wish you were here
I wish you were here
To see what I could see
To hear
And I wish you were here

Scarlet  (2:54)
     - I really don't like this song.  It's so bland and boring.  Thank God it's short otherwise I would pull a Rip Van Winkle, and never be seen awake for years.  Oh yeah, and look at the complicated lyrics here.  Bet it took them a long time to think of this one.  Plus, poor Larry almost has no involvement except pumping his foot on the bass drum.  I bet he had fun.  Bleh.  The only saving grace is Edge's beautiful piano...and that's it.

Rejoice
Rejoice
Rejoice

Is That All?  (3:04)
     - What is this song about??  I have no idea!!  I love this song, it's great, but what is it about?  What does it mean?  Anyway, there is a bit of a strange lyrical conflict.  Many lyric sites list the line I'm not happy with you, Singing this song makes me pale and if you listen to the song, he doesn't say that.  U2's official website says differently.  They say I'm not happy with you, Oh to sing this song makes me dance.  Anyway, great song.

Oh to sing this song makes me angry
I'm not angry with you.
Is that all?
Is that all?
Is that all?

Oh to sing this song makes me happy
I'm not happy with you.
Oh to sing this song makes me dance.
Is that all?
Is that all?
Is that all?

Is that all?
Is that all?
Is that all?
Is that all you want from me?
