Yes...
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...
Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...tonight...
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday...
Seconds (3:24)
-
Another great song, featuring Adam as the lead instrument, which is a nice
change. The song refers to nuclear war and is very reminescent of
Kurt Vonnegut Jr's Cats Cradle. The song is interrupted by
two pieces playing, one of two men talking (I can't make out what they're
saying) and of a man shouting a war song with women repeating it ("I want
to be an Air Force Ranger...I want to live a life of danger") which is
apparently an excerpt from "Soldier Girls" from an old film. Good
song.
Takes a second to say goodbye
Say goodbye, oh, oh, oh
It takes a second to say goodbye
Say goodbye, oh, oh, oh, say bye bye...
Where you going to now...
Lightning flashes across the sky
East to west, do or die
Like a thief in the night
See the world by candlelight.
Fall, rise and...Fall, rise and...
In an apartment on Time Square
You can assemble them anywhere
Held to ransom, hell to pay
A revolution everyday
USSR, GDR, London, New York, Peking
It's the puppets, It's the puppets
Who pull the strings
Fall, rise and...Fall, rise and...
Say goodbye, say goodbye
Say goodbye, say goodbye
Say goodbye
It takes a second to say goodbye
Say goodbye, oh, oh, oh
Push the button and pull the plug
Say goodbye, oh, oh, oh
Fall, rise and...Fall, rise and...
And they're doing the atomic bomb
Do they know where the dance comes from
Yes they're doing the atomic bomb
They want you to sing along
Say goodbye, say goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
New Year's Day (5:38)
- This
was one of the major hits off of this album, being the story of a soldier
in the battlefield on New Years and realizing that there won't be any change.
An excellent song with very sentimental lyrics. This is the full
version of the song with an added bridge, guitar solo, and final verse,
which the version on The Best of 1980 - 1990 and the music
video omits. The music video for this song is intriguing, with the
band outside in Sweden in the snow, riding on horses under a "blood red"
sky. Only small problem is Larry. He wasn't in sync in the
music video and is half a beat off. As a result, he looks really
silly. And check out Bono's hair! Blond highlights!
Yeah...
All is quiet on New Year's Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one
I...I will begin again
I...I will begin again
Oh...
Maybe the time is right
Oh...maybe tonight...
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
Like A Song (4:48)
- This
song has such a great beginning, the rest of the song is a bit of a letdown.
First is the aggressive snare drum, followed quickly by a fast paced guitar
piece by Edge. As soon as Bono comes in, the song starts to kind
of lose it's first appeal. It's a nice song, but by the end of the
second minute, you begin to wonder if there's anything else to this song.
High point of the song is definitely the lyrics though. One thing
I love about U2 is their great ability to spin off moving lyrics like this.
Like a song I have to sing
I sing it for you
Like the words I have to bring
I bring it for you
And in leather, lace, and chains
We stake our claim
Revolution once again
No I won't...
I won't wear it on my sleeve
I can see through this expression
And you know I don't believe
Too young to be told
Exactly who are you
Tonight
Tomorrow's
Too late
And we love to wear a badge, a uniform
And we love to fly a flag
But I won't...let others live in hell
As we divide against each other
And we fight amongst ourselves
Too set in our ways to try to rearrange
Too right to be wrong, in this rebel song
Let the bells ring out
Let the bells ring out
Is there nothing left
Is there, is there nothing
Is there nothing left
Is honesty what you want
A generation without name, ripped and torn
Nothing to lose, nothing to gain
Nothing at all
And if you can't help yourself
Well take a look around you
When others need your time
You say it's time to go...it's your time
Angry words won't stop the fight
Two wrongs won't make it right
A new heart is what I need
Oh God, make it bleed
Is there nothing left...
Drowning Man (4:12)
- The
story goes that after the critics were blah about October
Adam contemplated leaving the band. There probably were other reasons,
but I guess we're not privy to them. The band wrote this song for
him. Sometimes it's hard being a bass player. No one really
knows you're actually there, which can be disheartening. But let's
face it, you can't have a band without the bass. U2's usually good
with letting Adam have his moments, but you have to admit he doesn't get
as much a workout as Flea does in the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anyway,
the song is very sentimental, and has some great lines.
Take my hand
You know I'll be there
If you can
I'll cross the sky for your love
For I have promised
Oh, to be with you tonight
And for the time that will come
Take my hand
You know I'll be there
If you can
I'll cross the sky for your love
And I understand
These winds and tides
This change of times
Won't drag you away
Hold on, and hold on tightly
Hold on, and don't let go
Of my love
The storms will pass (the storm will pass)
It won't be long now (it won't be long now)
His love will last
His love will last...forever
Take my hand
You know I'll be there
If you can
I'll cross the sky for your love
Give you what I hold dear
Hold on, hold on tightly
Hold on, hold on tightly
Rise up, rise up
With wings like eagles
You run, you run
You run and not grow weary
(Take my hand, take my hand)
Hold on, and hold on tightly
Hold on, hold on tightly
To this love...last forever
To this love...last forever
Take my hand
Take my hand...
The Refugee (3:40)
- This
song definitely has a different sound to it, partially because it was produced
by Bill Whelan, instead of Steve Lillywhite. But this is such a fun
song to listen to, it really is. Sounds almost like XTC. Anyway,
listen to Larry go at it. I think this is the definite transition
from drums to percussion, because he does a little bit of everything here.
The song's basically about some girl leaving her family to move to America.
Not the most complex song lyrically, but a fun song!
Woah, woah...
She's the refugee.
I see your face
I see you staring back at me
Woah, woah...
She's the refugee
Her mama say one day she's gonna
Live in America
In the morning
She is waiting
Waiting for the ship to sail
Sail away
Woah, woah...
Her papa go to war
He gonna fight
But he don't know what for
Woah, woah...
Her papa go to war
Her mama say one day he's gonna
Come back from far away
Help me
How can you help me
In the evening
She is waiting
Waiting for her man to come
And take her by her hand
And take her to this promise land
Woah, woah...
She's a pretty face
But at the wrong time
In the wrong place
Woah, woah...
She's a pretty face
Her mama say one day she's gonna
Live in America
Yeah, America
Woah, woah...
She's a refugee
She's coming back, she's coming
Keep you company
Woah, woah...
She's a refugee
Her mama say one day she's gonna
Live in America
Two Hearts Beat As One (4:01)
- A song
about sex! Finally! For those who balk at songs about young
people grinding each other, this song was written by Bono on his honeymoon
to his high school sweetheart (still married, by the way). The song
is very uplifting and fast paced, and when Bono starts shouting jubilantly
in the midst of the song, you wonder if he wrote WHILE he was doing the
nasty. Anyway, I love this song, it really is one of their best.
I don't know
I don't know which side I'm on
I don't know my right from left
Or my right from wrong
Say I'm a fool
You say I'm nothing
But if I'm a fool for you
Oh, that's something
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts...
I can't stop the dance
Honey, this is my last chance
I said, can't stop the dance
Maybe this is my last chance
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts...
They beat on black, beat on white
Beat on everything don't get it right
Beat on you, beat on me, beat on love
I don't know
How to say what's got to be said
I don't know if it's black or white
There's others see it red
I don't get the answers right
I leave that to you
Is this love out of fashion
Or is it the time of year
Are these words distraction
To the words you want to hear
Two hearts beat as one
Two hearts beat as one
I try to spit it out
I try to explain
The way I feel
Oh, yeah
Two hearts
I can't stop the dance
Maybe this is my last chance
I said I can't stop the dance
Maybe this is my last chance
I said don't stop the dance
Maybe this is my last chance
I said I can't stop the dance
Maybe this is our last chance
I said don't stop the dance
Maybe this is our last chance
Red Light (4:09)
- My favourite
song by far. A great guitar riff by The Edge during the chorus, and
the backup singers really lend to the feeling of the song (even if they
only sing "da"). The song's about a guy who loves a girl who basically
tells him to go jump off a cliff. He has a lot of love to offer her,
but she's so trapped in her own misery she ignores someone who truly cares
about her. I love the trumpet solo, in the middle of the song.
It brings a very romantic feel to the song. Fantastic song.
I talk to you
You walk away
You're still on the down beat
You say you don't want my help
But you can't escape
If you're running from yourself
I give you my love
I give you my love
Give you my love
Still you walk away
It's your own late show
As you jump to the street below
But where can you go
To leave yourself behind
Alone in the spotlight
Of this, your own tragedy
I give you my love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love, love...
In the heart in the heart
In the heart of the city
Heart in the heart in
The heart of the city
Oh, love...
I pour my love out for you
And I'll bring you through
See your not alone
I give you my love, give you my love
Give you my love, give you my love
Give you my love, give you my love
Give you my love, give you my love
Give you my love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love...
Surrender (6:01)
- Another
song with those lady backup singers. They really make the song by
singing the chorus. It contrasts Bono's voice in such a way that
Bono sounds desperate, and the ladys sound calm and collected. It
creates an overall pleasing affect in the song. The song seems to
be about a girl named Sadie who falls in love, gets married, has kids,
maintains a house, blah blah blah, but has problems coping with the reality
of the responsibility of marrying while young. Now it seems her husband
left her, and she must resort to prostitution to support her family.
Interesting song.
Oh, the city's alight
With lovers and lies
Bright blue eyes
Oh, the city is bright
It's brighter than day tonight
Surrender, Surrender
Surrender, Surrender
Sadie said she couldn't work out
What it was all about
And so she let go
Now Sadie's on the street
And the people she meets you know
She tried to be a good girl and a good wife
Raise a good family
Lead a good life
It's not good enough
She got herself up on the 48th floor
Gotta find out
Find out what she's living for
Surrender, Surrender
Surrender, Surrender
Tonight...
Oh, the city's afire
A passionate flame
It knows me by name
Oh, the city's desire
To take me for more and more
It's in the street, getting under my feet
It's in the air, it's everywhere
My love for you
It's in the things I do and say
If I wanna live I gotta
Die to myself someday
Papa sing my sing my sing my song
Papa sing my sing my sing my song...
"40" (2:35)
- What
a way to end the album. Although I admit they needed a song to slow
things down, I don't like this song very much. It's catchy and is
the sort of son you sing with your arms around your buddies' shoulders
around a campfire. But really, the song bores me and even for a short
song, it tends to go on a bit long. Anyway, the song is a recreation
of Psalm 40, with David asking the Lord for deliverance.
I waited patiently for the Lord
He inclined and heard my cry
He brought me up out of the pit
Out of the miry clay
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long...how long...how long...
How long...to sing this song
He set my feet upon a rock
And made my footsteps firm
Many will see
Many will see and fear
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long...how long...how long...
How long...to sing this song
