Scarlett Johansson
Kudos
Scarlett on Robert Redford:
- It helped a lot that he was also an actor. A lot of the times you're not as fortunate to have that communication that you have with a fellow actor. And when they're directing you it makes it so much easier. It made it so much easier on my part. I guess you could call it actor talk.
- Everybody calls him Bob, but I hated calling him Bob - it seemed wierd - so I had to come up with some kind of nickname. I call him Booey, and he calls me Boo. It's nauseatingly adorable. (Teen People, June-July, p 30)
Cast on Scarlett:
- Robert Redford:
The role of Grace MacLean is a great part for a young actress because Grace is so central to the story. Her condition and her situation dramatically drives the whole piece. (HW UK website)
For Scarlett, a young actor, it's the role of a lifetime. And there were very high stakes around that part, because you're dealing with that really difficult transitional phase in a child's life of growing into adolescence. That can be tough all the way around, because they might grow up in a week. And then you're into some serious disguising. The fact that Scarlett is an urban child brought a lot to the story, because she's a thirteen-year-old going on forty. I thought that was
important as it would give her a real combative strength with the mother. It was worth taking a chance on her. (Total Film)
Scarlett also can act. She understands acting and, she can do it, which is not always the case. As soon as she got it, you could see it register like a branding iron on her mind. Then she just did it. She could do it again and and again and again. Quite interesting.
- Kristin Scott Thomas:
Scarlett is a very young actress, but she's not inexperienced. She's born to be on a movie set. It's extraordinary. And I thought we worked well together as a mother and daughter. There was definitely a chemistry there which was a relief, because it's not at all easy to play a mother, And I shouldn't think it's very easy to play a daughter either. It's a very intimate relationship that is difficult to cheat on. (Press Kit)
- Sam Neill:
I was pleased we had a natural ease from the beginning. ("The Horse Whisperer: An Illustrated Companion", p 123) It's infuriating that someone that young could be so good. Good for her, she's terrific.
Crew on Scarlett:
- Mike Boyle, head wrangler:
I think Scarlett started out pretty scared, but she's one of those people who doesn't say she's scared or show fear. And she made a two hundred per cent change and improvement. She got to where I could put her on any horse on the set, and she could just lope off and have fun.
- Scarlett said:
When I had a break, there was always a horse for me to hop on. They'd have to send out a search party to find me. I'm obsessed with horseback riding now. Whenever production assistants needed someone to come to the set, they'd play a song over the walkie-talkies they had chosen for that person. Mine was Go West by the Village People.
