The recovery of a girl and her horse after a serious accident.
Scarlett plays Grace MacLean.
in the drama film category for her role as Grace.
In recent times, the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, Robert Redford, has shifted his position from actor to a seemingly more pivotal role as director. In his latest film The Horse Whisperer, he works on both sides of the camera - albeit with a soft focus lens - to produce a story which is both tragic and beautiful.
A young girl Grace (Scarlett Johansson) is both physically and mentally injured in a freak horse-riding accident, which eventuates in the death of her best friend and the loss of her own leg. Her horse, Pilgrim, survives the accident, although when Grace visits him she realises he is psychologically in as bad shape as herself.
A pushy and ambitious mother, Annie (Kristin Scott Thomas), refuses to let either daughter or horse give up, and enlists the services of the horse whisperer, Tom Booker (Robert Redford), a man who helps horses with people problems. Strangely, neither daughter nor whisperer (or for that matter horse) are particularly interested, but slowly Tom works his magic on everyone - even Annie.
Although visually beautiful, the ultimate prize goes to the touching performance by Scarlett Johansson (a definite star in the making) as she displays perfectly the difficulties of coming to terms with such a tragedy. Second prize goes to Robert Redford, who might have aged somewhat, but there appears to be a lot of puff in the old stallion yet!
