For a movie with a somewhat similar theme go to Dark Horse.

Scarlett wore a prosthetic leg that was attached to her real leg with an ankle brace.
When asked how she prepared for the role, Scarlett said, "No one can tell you what it feels like to lose a body part - it's something I imagine you never get over and I had to develop that from the dramatic part of myself."
"I was amazed at the technology that exists for prosthetics today. I met a boy who showed me how he worked with his leg and how to walk up and down stairs. I watched videos and read books about different people's stories, and it was amazing to me how amputees play baseball and ride horses and go swimming and dancing, and are very, very good at what they do."
"The makeup artist would constantly remind me when I wasn't swinging my leg or moving appropriately."

The following are some suggested resources.

Grace with cane

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
(Emily Dickinson)
