20th Century Fox is close to a deal to reunite Jim Carrey with his Dumb and Dumber filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly on the split-personality comedy Me, Myself And Irene. Neither Fox nor Carrey's reps would comment about the film or Carrey's involvement; but Carrey wants Irene to be his next film, sources close to the project said. Fox still has to come to financial terms with Carrey (whose take home pay rests firmly in the $20 million neighborhood), but to some close to the talks, that is considered a formality. The production budget is expected to be about $45 million. Irene, rich with physical gags and equipped with the Farrellys' now-signature dismissal of the high-brow, should serve as a further showcase of Carrey's comic largess. Carrey will play a Rhode Island state trooper with a split personality. When he fails to take his medication, each of his competing personalities falls in love with the same woman (Irene), and with his internal chemistry now in tumult, they declare war on each other. Once a deal is finalized with Carrey, Fox and the Farrellys are expected to begin preparing the film for a May start, with release set for next spring or summer. Shooting is expected to wrap in July or so, allowing Carrey to move on to Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, which Ron Howard is set to start shooting this fall at Universal for a Thanksgiving 2000 release. The Farrellys co-wrote Me, Myself And Irene with Mike Cerrone. The plan had been for the Farrellys to produce the picture but not direct, so that they could prepare the Siamese twins comedy Stuck on You to direct for Fox. But the plan changed once Carrey became involved. (Variety, March 27, 1999) |

The New York Daily News reports that Man On The Moon co-stars Jim Carrey and Courtney Love had an hourlong tête-à-tête following a recent Hole show at the Palace Theater in Los Angeles. Carrey was on hand to watch Love's band perform Sunday night at a concert put on by MTV. After the set ended, says the paper, the $20 million man "slipped into [Love's] backstage lair." "I don't know what they were doing in there," an insider tells the News. "And no one was knocking on the door to find out. They wanted privacy." The two became friends on the set of the Andy Kaufman biopic, and both recently went through breakups, Love with Edward Norton and Carrey with Lauren Holly. But Love's publicist insist the two aren't romantically involved. They're "friends," the rep tells the paper. "People keep trying to link her with someone ever since she stopped seeing Ed Norton." Jim Carrey is a lock to play that "nasty, wasty skunk" who sets out to torment all the Whos in Whoville. Universal Pictures confirmed Monday that Carrey will indeed headline the live-action version of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (try fitting that on a marquee). The film will be released Thanksgiving of 2000, with Ron Howard directing and Brian Grazer producing. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Carrey tried on his Grinch costume — courtesy of Oscar-winning special effects guru Rick Baker — on Monday. "We saw Jim in his Grinch outfit, and this is the perfect vehicle for him," Grazer tells the trade. "It allows him to be what he's so genius at being — powerful and creatively resourceful." Carrey will reportedly receive $20 million up front for the Grinch, plus a chunk of the sure-to-be-lucrative merchandising sales. (Mr Showbiz, February 23, 1999 ) |

Jim Carrey was in a sound sleep when his agent woke him to say he had just been nominated for a Golden Globe. "If I’m still dreaming, I hope I’m not going to wake up suddenly," said Carrey, who traditionally has been known as a comic. But his starring role in The Truman Show netted him his first dramatic actor nomination. "It feels tremendous to be openly accepted when you switch gears," he said. "I must have done something nice in my past life to deserve this - like saving someone from a burning building and then going in once more to get their hamster. It's either the biggest compliment in the world or another White House smokescreen - just another way of delaying the impeachment process. It was such a leap in my career when Truman Show came along. It's always been a long process for me insofar as recognition goes, but that's OK because you appreciate it when it comes.""I pulled the sleepers out of my eyes and danced around the room a little bit," said Jim, who was nominated for best actor after toning down his manic comedy style for the starring role. "It's an amazing thing to have this kind of acceptance when you make a departure." The Truman Show won kudos for Best Drama, Best Actor In A Drama (Carrey), Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), Best Director (Peter Weir), Best Screenwriter (Andrew Niccol), and Best Original Score. The Golden Globes are sometimes a bellwether for the Academy Awards and will be given out Jan. 24 on NBC. (December 17, 1998) |

Jim Carrey and Woody Allen as Siamese twins? That's exactly what brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly hope to do in Stuck on You. "The theory is that Jim and Woody can be Siamese twins because they share a liver," the wild and wacky Peter Farrelly tells the Boston Herald. "Jim has most of the liver, so Woody's not aging well." In the story, the twins run a burger joint in Rhode Island but Woody's character wants to be an actor, so they travel to New York to audition for parts together. The Farrellys already have signed up Allen to star and have an offer out to Carrey. (New York Daily News, December 19, 1998) |
Danny DeVito, celebrated his 54th birthday in New York, at Rao's — the tiny, impossible-to-get-a-reservation joint in East Harlem. Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola hosted a group that included Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion and Jim Carrey. Dinner started out quietly enough. But around sambuca time, owner Frank Pelligrino turned up the jukebox. Carrey came out of his shell to sing Under The Boardwalk and Up On The Roof. DeVito joined in but was advised by Mottola to keep his day job. Fortunately, the jokers got some professional assistance from Dion and Estefan. (New York Daily News, November 22, 1998) |

The bunny's back. Seems that the famed Playboy Mansion, that faded center for celebrity debauchery, is making a comeback. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was the place to be. But AIDS and the feminist movement did in Hugh Hefner's grand bachelor pad. Now, according to E! Online, Hollywood's young and hip have discovered Hugh, his lounging PJs and even the mansion's grotto, purported site of many a star-and-bunny coupling. Among the newbies: Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Drew Carey, Fiona Apple, Tori Spelling and Jerry Springer. (Detroit Free Press, November 17, 1998) |

The recent success of the movie A Night At The Roxbury, now in theaters, makes Jim Carrey smiles. The pic, starring Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell, was based on a Saturday Night Live skit which started when he was hosting the show. This story about three guys going in the clubs to get girls became the most popular of the show. But the fact is that Jim has written this idea with the SNL cast. Of course, he is uncredited in the movie. |
