Ok, now, Helen she is a lawyer and a workaholic. She spends a lot of time working. Jake is an over-streesed marketing consultant. Helen is the one really tough on the kids and Jake is supposed to back her up. When Jake tries to speak to the girls, Helen shuts him up. Jake usually really isn't aware of the things going on around him, so that's why Helen's like that.
