Molly quietly padded out of the saloon door her mind running with thoughts of what was going on with her father and her uncle. The lies, the guns. Her mind went to earlier when her Uncle had grabbed her, the wild look in his eyes caused her to shiver. In the hours before the dawn.
"Here miss," Molly jumped at the voice that had snuck up behind her, "I'm sorry , I didn't mean to scare you."
Molly looked at the source of the fright and gave a wry smile, "It's ok, I'm fine."
The boy smiled, "My names Jake, here," Jake said handing Molly his jacket. Reluctantly, Molly took the offered jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.
"What are you doing up at this hour," She asked.
Jake shrugged, "My pa and I used to get up real early and watch the sun come up over the hills, guess it's just become tradition," Jake smiled, "would you like to accompany me?" Molly shrugged, finding the boy to be non threatening. Slowly the two walked down the boardwalk.
The night air was cool, as KC slept huddled in her bed roll underneath the sliver of the moon that hung high in the sky. The horse grazed quietly nearby. A muted crack echoed through the area, KC's eyes opened, alert she looked around her barely moving from her position. The sound had come from a distance she figured. Two more reports followed in fast succession.
Getting up from her place she quickly, jumped up on her horse, galloping him toward the sound. She could feel every muscle work as the horse thundered across the field. She rode with her heels pushed way down in order to stay aboard the slick back of the horse. She stopped her horse away from the commotion ground tying him to his place. She skirted around quickly to get a good view of what was going on. Below she could see a number of people. Two she recognized as Jake and Molly. Jake, tried as he could to protect Molly shielding her behind him.
