EPISODE GUIDE: THE OUTLAW YEARS

AS SEEN ON THE ODYSSEY CHANNEL!!

First of all, congratulations to Odyseey for their willingness to show the second season of our favorite show. As promised long ago, we are happy to unveil our episode guide for The Outlaw Years, which will be a work in progress. Part of the reason for this is that we are finding NEW scenes that we have never seen in the version on TNT. The big news is we think that, beginning with "The Return" on 11/18, the episodes are being shown, all of them, in sequence. Come back and visit for all the scoop - the next couple will be new, and we'll add them to our guide, plus we'll try to re-arrange our information in order to match the order of the episodes. Now, if The Outlaw Years isn't your cup of tea, visit our episode guide to Season One (aka "The Perky Years")

THE RETURN: Well, after not seeing this episode for a year, it was like having an all new Lonesome Dove to watch. This is the first episode of season two, and sets the stage for the changes in characters as well as introduction of new ones. We see alot of vulnerability in Call during this one that we won't see again this season - at least not to this extent. His grief and guilt over Hannah's death, his hurt feelings at not being immediately welcomed by the inlaws - particularly Austin, his grief over the changes in the town. Everyone's hair is a little longer, and I think that they all lowered their voices an octave - it's quite a transformation for those who saw season one.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: I know that there is at least one new scene, only because Allison D. has the info on her Wanted: Lonesome Dove web page. My memory is not good for this one otherwise, so I really can't be sure of others. If anyone observed other changes, please e-mail me and I'll post them.

THE HANGING: Devon Sawa (Scott Bairstow's co-star in "Wild America") guest stars as a teenager who gets in over his head with cattle rustlers. Call attempts to treat agoraphobia as only he can do, and we witness the first of several "fake hangings" for season 2. This has some really poignant scenes as the town tries to decide between justice and mercy.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: I think that the scene with Austin and Unbob debating where the law is "written" is either new or expanded from the TNT version. They also cut Call and Sadie's conversation about the "world class poke".

FEAR: A man from Mosby's past arrives and does a little stalking while in town. Same man also forms an attachment with Mattie. Advice for Mattie: never date a man with hair longer than yours!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Other than a few clipbs here and there for language, this episode is as we remember. Advice to the squeamish - don't watch this one while you eat dinner;-)

NATURE OF THE BEAST: One of the the single best episodes of either season. The mysterious murder of a prostitute sets of a chain reaction of emotions and flashbacks of all kinds for Call and Josiah. Best scene of the season, hands down, is the scene where Josiah and Call try to come to grips with those emotions. It's a wonder either of them come out alive. Not to be flip, but it is also a memorable "hair day" for Call. Enjoy it now - it will be awhile before you get another glimpse of at least the semi-dry look. Dr. Cleese remains slightly irritating (he always reminds me of the character of Joel Flesichman on "Northern Exposure"). Also sad - Austin apparently has nothing left to love but that stupid badge of his. Oh... and Mosby girls - there's quite a tub scene for you!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: There appeared to be a couple of scenes extended, but they didn't really advance the plot. However, there was an ENDING CHANGE. After the "TNT end", in which Call decides to accept a drink to celebrate, there is another, fairly lengthy scene in which Call and Austin debrief on the events, and this only drives them further apart. Too bad, because in the scene with them together before, it looks like the opposite could happen. Anyway, we at least see in that particular scene that Call has changed his shirt - which I believe, was somewhat overdue.

THE ALLIANCE: Well, until I saw the "new" first scene, I thought these episodes were in order. However, Della and Fiona reappear through the magic of television after the events of last night's episode. Anyway, in this one, Mosby decides how much is too much in trying to negotiate with a railroad tycoon. Now, this guy's son, Deke and his blonde friend should be first in the running when they make the western version of "Dumb and Dumber". It's obvious tonight that Call has a soft spot for Mattie. Most fun scene - Call and Mosby - Mosby trying to convince Call to tell him what he knows. Call's obvious amusement.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: There is a new opening scene, with Della and Fiona at Twyla's, which actually sets the stage for some of Della's "issues" with Fiona. Also, the guy with the skinny face is featured much more prominently - especially that business with the chewing tobacco in first scene between Mosby and the railroad guy. What else....alot of the scenes looked like they were slightly altered - small changes in dialog, camera angle, etc. from TNT. Oh - I hadn't heard the line before where they called Curtis Wells a "pissing stop for the stagecoach". And while we're on the subject of editing..I can't believe that they left that first scene at Twyla's in there - it added absolutely nothing to the plot, plus there was a shot of a woman with her backside partially exposed and Della never did bother to button her shirt. Sometimes Odyssey's editing doesn't have rhyme or reason, but we're still glad they are showing Lonesome Dove!!

BADLANDS: After our unfortunate mishap with the VCR timer in September, we caught Badlands on 10/5. As we said before, Mosby escorts a trio of "ladies" across the Badlands, where they meet a vegetarian family with some pretty strange habits. We get to see Mosby as more of who he is, vs. the "dandified son-of-a-bitch" (not my words, mind you!) of Curtis Wells. Mud, hunger and those wacky vegetarians act as the great social/economic equalizer. Oh - in a subplot - Austin and Call try to prevent a robbery, and yes, Call's hair looks pretty good in this one.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: This one is a little difficult to tell due to poor memory. However, I think there is an extension on a scene between Austin and Josiah where Josiah is saying that, for all practical purposes, Mosby is the only one who has the power to go around town council to get the pump fixed (duh!).

THE BRIDE: Okay - I went to bed early on Friday, not realizing that this, one of my very favorite episodes, was showing. Call saves a sweet young thing from a future of a rather yucky menage-a-trois. He also has a good hair day and a clean shirt. And in an interesting subplot, Curtis Wells reacts to the new minister

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Well, since I was in bed and didn't actually get to see this one, I don't know - I'm really bummed about it too. I'll try to catch it next time around. PROVIDENCE: Boy oh Boy - this is the personal favorite of the webmistress!! And imagine the excitement when we saw not ONE, but TWO new scenes added! In this episode, we are introduced to Amanda and her so-called brother Frank (Chris Potter), not to mention a most exciting game of roulette!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: First, we see Call with an extra line - when he's looking at a certain dead body, he adds the line "I wouldn't stop to piss on him if he was on fire" - that's our Call - so......articulate. Another scene -Frank, all cleaned up, dining in the hotel with Josiah and several local girls, charming them all to death. Mosby and Amanda continue to discuss their whiskey issues on the side, and Mosby gets to meet Frank. Note here - the also CHANGED THE ENDING! After Mosby and Amanda spend there last scene on the porch, Amanda goes back in the hotel and has a conversation with Call - he's mad because she saved Mosby's life. She continues to try to convince him that she's her own woman. It ends with her calling Ike to get back to business as usual.

REDEMPTION: Mosby shows his humanity - and works just briefly on a more formal relationship with "the deity". The rest of the time, he tries to convince himself that he didn't sacrifice anything in his quest for more and more money.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: This may be my imagination, but I thought I saw an extra scene between Mosby and Zander at the beginning. However, this is not one of my favorite episodes, so I haven't committed as many details to memory. What I will say is that once again, they CHANGED THE ENDING! After Mosby sits in the church pew, they cut to the scene (which can be found in pictures and sound clips on Allison's Wanted: Lonesome Dove page) where Unbob tries to repay Call for saving his life by giving him that famous "two coats in one". Let's just say, after seeing the coat, it really wouldn't work with that current fashion statement that Call has worked so hard to develop!

DAY OF THE DEAD: The Old West meets the X-Files in this funny and sort of Halloween-type episode. Tarot cards and special tonic are in the spotlight, as Call nurses a toothache and Mattie battles insomnia and nightmares. Favorite insult overheard in the Lonesome Dove Hotel: "you are a blot" In addition to all of this, Mattie does a little striptease and we actually see Mosby a little flustered!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Once again, an added bonus scene. Joe (the carnival guy) and Amanda discuss someone who had their tongue cut out by the Indians (I think it was the guy who was hammering nails up his nose in an earlier scene), plus Amanda tries to see if Call can accept solid food. Call also issues a warning about the carnival guy and the curse on Curtis Wells. Also, some of the other scenes seem pretty much the same, but not terribly familiar. This may be either poor memory on the part of the webmistress, or it could mean that the same basic scenes are there but a slightly different version of the ones from TNT.

THICKER THAN WATER: The tables are turned as Call finds himself with a sizeable price on his head. Meanwhile, Unbob becomes a daddy. Also, we are introduced the the webmistress's favorite Lonesome Dove fruit - the muddy apple.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Well, once again, there's a NEW SCENE. This one is between Mattie and Unbob - he talks about his feelings about fatherhood, and his frustration with being "dim". Mattie is, as always, so positive and reassuring with him. Other edits (we think) include some cutting and pasting of scenes in a little different way that what we saw on TNT. Our only complaint is that they cut the scene into two scenes where Call is in the Ambrosia giving his Oscar worthy performance in recounting the events that made him a hunted man.

LOVER'S LEAP: Mattie's new boyfriend has a "past", Austin has an exceptionally good hair day, while Call's hair....well....it's the usual. We get to see the best of Mattie's gun collection as well as a tub scene for you Mattie fans out there. Nicholas Lea guest stars - we understand he has a few fans out there as well. Bring your hankies!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Well, we couldn't really detect any - if anybody noticed anything, e-mail us!

ANGEL: "Enona" makes her debut. Call nurses a snakebite and a bad case of ESP. As far as we know, Enona is his first gal since the lovely Hannah died in the explosion. Pretty interesting plot on this one. Minor gross out alert on some scenes.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: NEW SCENE: Mosby pays Luther to drink somewhere other than his club after a barfight. The bizarre black and white scene with Call and Enona together is cut, we suppose in the interest of good taste.

BOUNTY: Call works on his cross cultural competence as he tries to prevent some gruesome killings.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Looks a like a couple of extra scenes between Call and Unob - they are an interesting pair!

CATTLE WAR: What a great old fashioned western episode - lots of cows, horses, etc. Call has a little extra spring in his step at the idea of getting involved with the cattle drive. On the other hand, he is exceptionally nasty to Mattie - Great background music on this one too, and a great ending! Must see TV!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Looks like they added a scene between Call and Unbob discussing hangings/trials and such. Also, extra scene with Amanda and "Bevin" - I can't figure these two out - that's all I can say!

BETRAYAL: A personal favorite of the webmistress - the Oscar goes to Paul Johansson (Austin) for this one. He rarely gets to show what he can do as an actor, but this one was exceptional. Also, Call and Mattie look like they're having way too much fun, until Call tries to protect her - then it's back to the usual.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Extra scene between Call and Mattie - discussing Austin being jealous of Call accompanying her on her little trip. Call is clearly amused by the whole thing. However, the best new scene is Frances, Ike and Rena when Frances catches Ike and Rena together (not a pretty mental image, mind you....) Frances - yelling and hitting them with some kind of sweater or blanket or something saying "he's mine, I love him, I paid for him. Yikes!!!!! Noticeable edit: the line by Rena "I don't do girls" is missing.

THE ROBBERY: Mosby has flashbacks of the war during and after a brutal robbery at the Ambrosia Club. Meanwhile, Call takes the day off "out of uniform".

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Well, as we might have predicted, the scene between Call and Florie was trimmed down quite a bit, so viewers never got to hear her say to Call "You know what the girls say about you? Well, I'm not telling you except for this - it's true!". Hmmmm....wonder what they said.... NEW SCENES/EDITS: Scene with Call and Florie has her asking him if Mosby was the last man on earth and Call was the only one who could save him, would he do it? Call's answer: no. (Webmistress comment: C'mon Call....you would so - we know you better than that!). Also, at the very beginning, when Mosby is in the stable and he turns at the sound - in the original TNT episodes, you see nothing, but in the ODYSSEY version, you see the shadow of a man slipping into the background. We think that's all of the edits - refresh our memory if you know of others.

THE HIDEOUT: Mosby gets involved in bad business with a mirror image of himself (Peters IS Mosby with different skin color). Meanwhile, Call regrets his request to stay at Mattie's.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Okay - I was only listening, not watching because I was playing with my new computer. I was hoping they would change the ending, which is lame at best, but no luck.

WHEN SHE WAS GOOD: Okay - still playing with my computer while watching television. In this episode Frances is accused of some Lizzie Borden type behavior. Can I just say that we should know Francis is a little "off" after the way she behaved about Ike in Betrayal. In a more lighthearted vein, Call and Mattie discuss his favorite gal at Twyla's, and Call does a little balance beam number in the barn, followed by flirting with Frances.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: Maybe it's me watching with only half an eye (did I mention how excited I am about my new computer - LOL!!!). It seemed to me that this episode was pretty different from the TNT version - the same scenes but maybe shown from different angles, or some minor dialogue changes. Also, there are at least a couple of scenes: one in which Mattie talks to Call about why Frances involved him in this mess, and Mattie tries to convince Mosby to do something to help Frances get back on her feet financially.

MEDICINE: Enona returns with a case of amnesia. Meanwhile, Curtis Wells prepares for Indian attack. Austin is really "uglied up" with all of his stubble, cigars, and yucky hair. Call and Mosby's hair looks pretty good until the hats come off. Oh, and the coat worn by the Indian agent looks strangely familiar, like the one Unbob tried to give to Call in Redemption.

ODYSSEY CHANGES: You know, my memory is really starting to go - alot of this didn't look familiar at all, but my husband says that it was all there before. I think that the opening scene is a little more "Enona intensive" than in the TNT version, and the scene where Unbob wants to spend the night at Mattie's is also one I don't remember.

LOVE AND WAR: If the episodes were shown in order, this would be the last one. Call and Luther bring in the bounty (with Mattie on a ride-a-long). Josiah tries his hand at law enforcement and Mattie attempts to say goodbye to the men in her life. Call misses his chance at goodbye - oh the look on his face when he realizes that!

ODYSSEY CHANGES: For those of you who have seen this one, the bedroom scene with Amanda and Mosby was trimmed down to almost nothing - no surprise there. This one also includes the missing scene of Mattie giving her goodbye gift to Mosby - very sweet. I think some of the few moments where we see Mosby as a "real" person are when he is with Mattie.

STAY TUNED FOR OUR EPISODE UPDATES!! AND KEEP WATCHING ODYSSEY. ODYSSEY HAS ADDED MORE TOY EPISODES TO THE LINE UP - KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR:

PARTNERS, NATURE OF THE BEAST, THE ALLIANCE, AND THE HANGING. LOOKS LIKE ALL OF THE EPISODES WILL AIR, IN SOME KIND OF ORDER, BEFORE THE MILLENIUM. THANKS ODYSSEY, FOR HEARING OUR PLEA! (and special thanks to Rosilyn for keeping me up to date on Odyssey's plans!)
