Transcripts Howie Mandel Air Date: Wednesday, April 7, 1999 *Transcribed by Treasa* *Snaps made by Ace* Treasa's Comment Re: the Appearance: Just in case you didn't hear, the interview was pre-recorded (before SOT aired its first episode) at Chuck Norris' house. Howie arrived at Chuck's house with a woman supposedly from his audience under the pretense that she needed to use Chuck's bathroom. When they sit own for the interview, Chuck is seated on the left (our right) end of a couch and Howieis adjacent to Chuck's left (our right)on a living room chair. Everyone was smiling during the whole interview, so, rather than be redundant, I added "smiling" when they had *really* big smiles. HOWIE MANDEL: So now, this show Walker, Texas Ranger has been on, this is, um, this is unbelievable to me...it's seven, are you in your seventh season? CHUCK NORRIS: Starting my seventh year, uh, this May. HM: Wow. And you're, like, you're a big time mogul, right? 'Cause you're doing, like, a big spin-off now. What, what is this? CN: Yeah, actually. Yeah, we're doing a show called Sons of Thunder. In fact, the stars are here. [Turns to his right and calls] Hey, uh, Jimmy, Marco, come in. HM: They just happen to be in the house. CN: I don't let them out of my sight. [Laughter from Jimmy and Marco off-screen.] These are my stars. They don't go anywhere without me. HM: [Stands up to shake hands, first with Marco, then Jimmy.] How are ya? Howie Mandel. [Marco sits on the couch to Chuck's right; Jimmy sits to Marco's right.] JW: We're his bodyguards. CN: Yeah, right. [Laughs] HM: Now, they started on your show? CN: Yeah. HM: They were, they started on your show and you're spinning off these characters for their own show? CN: Well, actually, I brought them on as an ensemble cast for Walker, and then, as we were filming, I started seeing a, really, a chemistry between these two guys... HM: Right. CN: ...a camaraderie they were developing and me and my brother started talking about, you know, if we were gonna do a spin-off, these would be the guys to do it with. HM: Now you and your brother are partners, right? CN: Right. My brother and I, my brother is my co-executive producer. HM: You get a shot of them right there. There's two brothers! [Points to - and camera zooms in on - a displayed photograph of CN and his brother as children.] There's the partners right there. There they are. CN: [Laughs] Yeah, that's us. [Marco & Jimmy laughing off-camera.] Anyway, uh, we did a two-hour movie called "Sons of Thunder" and it was very successful. HM: [To Jimmy & Marco] Now, are you guys martial artists also? [Marco and Chuck both point to Jimmy.] CN: He is. JIMMY WLCEK: I'm his, [Points to CN] uh, protégé. HM: Really? CN: Yeah. In the story, uh, yeah, he's a young kid who,uh, I trained and he was kind of a rebel-rouser as a kid and I took him under my wing and I trained him in the martial arts. HM: But did you really - but you're saying, on the show you did - did you really train him? CN: Oh, yeah, he knows, my black-belts have been training him like crazy. He, he was already a martial artist, but, but I've got my black-belts working with him every day now and they're really... JW: He's got me working with the best of the best. HM: [To Marco] And you? MARCO SANCHEZ: Oh, I'm a slacker. [Smiling] CN: [Laughs loudly and lightly elbows him in the arm.] HM: Really? You don't... MS: Oh, uh, martial arts requires, uh, discipline, focus, and, uh, the desire to stretch. Qualities that I don't possess at all. [Everyone laughs.] HM: Nothing? MS: Nothing. HM: So this is good. And then, and then it stars in, this actually...Sons of Thunder will, will, uh, start in March? CN: After it stars, yes, it will air, uh, March sixth. The *first* one. They're going, they're going to be showing Sons of Thunder on the Walker time slot. HM: Right. CN: But I want to repeat, [note: not sure exactly what that word was] they're not replacing Walker. HM: Okay. CN: They're just gonna be shown for six of, uh, Walker's, uh, nights, shows, and, uh, then, well, then one, once when they're picked up after the six episodes, then we'll find a time slot for them. HM: Wow. That's great. So you're like, like a mogul. Now, do you mind if I stay here until your wife comes home to see what she bought? [Everyone laughs.] CN: Yeah, sure. [Laughing] HM: Is she out food shopping or clothes shopping? CN: Truthfully, Howie, I have no idea. HM: You don't even go with her. CN: [Looking, presumably, towards the door] Is that...? She may be back. HM: And you say you only spend three weeks here. This is such a gorgeous house. Did you design this yourself? I love all the woodworking. CN: Yeah, I've been here twelve years, and, uh, you know, when I moved up to Dallas to do the series, I just couldn't get rid of this house. I just love this house. HM: I know this from something I read or something I heard: Is this house haunted? CN: Yeah, yeah, it is, interestingly enough, some weird things that have happened in this house. HM: [Smiling] Not, not to mention this. I think *this* is very weird. [Everyone laughs] JW: Where's Rose, there she is. [Applauds] [Rose has appeared on the right side of the screen, behind Howie.] MS: [To Rose] Hey! ROSE: Thank you, Mister Norris, for letting me use your restroom. [Waves hand in front of her face.] Shew! I wouldn't go in there right now! [Everyone laughs really loudly.] MS: But your name is *Rose.* HM: [Laughs] Her name is *Rose.* [Laughs] [To CN:]You've been more than hospitable. JW: Rose, c'mere. [Waves her toward himself.] HM: Good luck with the new show. Rose, I gotta take you back to the show.[All stand up, Rose walks across the room and Jimmy goes over to her and gives her a big hug.] |
