JANUARY, 2002
"Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it!">
~~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
January 1, 2002 - BingoKid chose his own way of welcoming in the new year. It wasn’t the best gift in the world for him, but he did handle it all well. I’m proud of how appropriately he took the situation in hand. He helped Allan working on the new building today. He started to turn around and do something. Being at that gangling adolescence age, he stumbled and fell. Ironically, he happened to fall and hit the corner of the box blade on the back of the tractor! His mouth took the brutal force of the blow. One of his front teeth came out. Allan being a paramedic knew to get the tooth and preserve it before doing anything else. He called for my advice since our dentist was closed. I gave him the home phone number so he could call for help. Our dentist said to meet him at the office.
Allan met Wes and from there Dad was in charge of BingoKid. Wes called Wendy and told her that if she wanted to see what happened, she would have to meet them at the Valdese Hospital where the doctor’s office is located. He was not stopping along the way. Once an x-ray was taken, the bad news was that the tooth beside the one that came out was broken in three places and may not be saved. The other tooth went back into place and seated well, so hopefully it will be okay. A cut along the side of the lip was stitched up and plans made to call a specialist in Charlotte first thing Wednesday morning to consult about trying to save the broken tooth if at all possible. BingoKid is on soup, Jell-O and very soft foods for the next little while. He was unable to join in and eat with us this evening.
Tbird’s Hubby went to the foot doctor today and had an ingrown toenail cut out. He was hobbling around and beginning to have a lot of pain since he had to wait until he got home to take any more pain medicine for his injured foot. Our group broke up early and went their separate ways long before the new year began.
What a sight we must look like with our assortment of injuries!
January 2, 2002 - Tbird made her flight to New York with no hitches yesterday evening. Being with the Red Cross for this trip, she had no idea where she was going for sure until she got to the airport and made a call to a Red Cross representative who was to give her the destination where she would be staying. Once in her hotel room she called home to give a number. If we should need her for anything we have a Red Cross number to call during the next two weeks in case she should be moving about. This trip she will be doing one-on-one counseling for which she has been trained. Traveling is most different for her this period of time because it is the very first time she has been completely on her own. There are no friends with her, however, her sister is less than an hour’s drive away which is reassuring to Mom.
Early this morning her two boys arrived to spend the day with me while Dad worked. Giggles is back in daycare, but the boys go back to school next week. They required little attention from me other than to fix favorite foods which seem to be much better if Grandma does the work. DynoKid wanted to do special work and earn some money so he was searching for more and more to do to my satisfaction. It was nice having him doing things that needed to be done and smiling as he worked. It’s nice, also, to finally have the toy box cleaned out and the toys that were broken gone. There’s more room - if only some of the things were collected and grouped together. Maybe next time for starters, he can go through and put all the building blocks in a bag together and the matchbox cars back in the blue bag where they were for a long time.
We took Mother some cokes since she is out and packed up most of the Christmas decorations in her room. The wreath on the door was changed from the Santa we made a few years ago for a snowman and the words, Let It Snow! What could be more appropriate since snow is in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow? She wanted the lights on the tree turned on to brighten up the room since today is so dreary so I left it and her cards for another day. NascarKid carried a large shopping bag of Christmas goodies home to store for next year. OOPS! I just remembered that we left her dog that plays all the different carols.
The boys were left home alone for a short time since my doctor’s appointment overlapped the time Dad was coming to pick them up. My prayer was to get to Hickory and back safely before the snow started. Snow was blowing as I crossed the river into Catawba County and continued for a short time, which made me a little apprehensive. Adding to that concern was the fact the doctor was running behind. The four o’clock appointment stretched into a six o’ clock meeting. By the time he came in to see my finger, I had managed to work around the packing and loosen it enough that he had only one little scrap to tug off. I was thankful for that. We were all disappointed that much of the redness was evident and some signs of a little infection was hanging on. Overall the finger looks better. It is not as well as I would feel better about though. Now I have to soak it in betadine solution twice a day, continue on antibiotics and return in one week. If there is any change for the worse, I am not to wait, but return immediately. There is still a chance I may end up in the hospital. There is the possibility the incision made this time will heal causing the joint to fuse itself. That will save another time having to work on it.
The caution was made that if any of my other fingers show any sign of a cyst flaring up as they have done in the past, I should come in for them to check it and not give it the opportunity to develop into what I’ve had this time.
A trip by the drugstore to have my new antibiotic medicine filled and I’m turning onto the road leading home after seven o’clock. Snow blowing in the wind is caught in the headlamps of the car. The Foothills and Mountains were not included in the forecast for snow. Most of the action was called for between Charlotte and the coast. Methinks the forecaster may be a speck miscalculated with the forecast ...
January 3, 2002 - The phone rings. Here it is 1:45, early morning. Who in the world would be calling? Hopefully no one is injured or in trouble.
“Hello.”
“Have you looked out the window?”
“No. Why?”
“Is it snowing there?
“I don’t know. Guess if it’s snowing where you are, it’s snowing here. Can you look out and see snow there?”
“I haven’t looked out, but the girls are telling me it’s snowing pretty hard. I just wondered if you had snow, too.”
My Mom! She has no idea what time it is and I don’t bother to say anything about the time. She is as excited as a child about the first snow of the season and has to share that excitement with me. After assuring her that I would keep an eye on the snow and had not plans for going out in it, we said goodnight.
We originally were not to get any snow, now - early in the morning - the forecast calls for up to five inches of the fluffy white stuff in our little city nestled in the valley at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I don’t expect the boys today. That could change with a phone call. If I have the boys, Giggles will be included. The daycare will be closed more than likely.
Everyone got snowed in around here. Schools, daycare and many other places are closed. Dad stayed home with Little Miss Giggles and her brothers. He called to see if I needed anything and to check on the finger. The Finger is the biggest topic with those that call now. BJ called last night to see what the doctor had to say and my sister-in-law talked for a while as well. Allan keeps calling everyday to check with me on how the day has progressed. He feels that all will turn out okay as long as I rest a bundle and use prudence in the care of the hand. What better way to do so than take full advantage of a snow day and rest!
Buddy Boy’s name was announced on the radio this morning. It’s the very first time his new last name has been used in public. Up until the adoption process was begun, legally his birth-mother’s name had to be used. Today is his fourth birthday. He has been with our family for three years, eight and a half months - and is very much a part of the family.
Ms. Jay ventured out into the snow this morning to deliver the newspapers. As she came in to visit a while, Oreo darted out to scamper around in the mystic white stuff falling from the sky. We no more than got settled down to talk a spell and Oreo was bouncing up and down at the storm door begging to get back inside. He likes the snow in small doses.
Lady sped through the house with her magic yesterday while I was in Hickory. It’s been two weeks since she has cleaned the house and it was more than ready for her not-so-social call. Opening the entry door, the aroma of pine cleaner drifted through the open door announcing her visit as I breathed in a deep breath. She left me a note propped on the stove top and I noticed from the time listed that we missed each other by only twenty minutes. I knew she was wanting to get home before there was a chance of snow making it a dangerous trip for her since she lives out from Morganton.
