Bruce's Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Story

Monday, February 19, 2001
I apologize for not writing recently. I thought once Bruce went into remission, people would no longer be interested in his daily ups and downs. Apparently I was wrong though, as I've received many messages requesting an update.

The week following the last time I wrote, Bruce's blood counts went up, so we thought he had past the nadir and we were heading for smooth sailing. The following week however, his WBC (including his neutrophil count) was down some. And, last week it was down some more. It's not dangerous yet, although it is approaching where it was a few weeks ago, and we're wondering why it's heading down again. Perhaps the week it went up, there was a false reading? His RBC is also down, but at least his platelet counts have continued to go up and they're now within normal levels.

Bruce's onc was concerned that he might have hypothyroidism, because of how fatigued he's been (hypothyroidism is a concern with Bexxar, because of the Iodine 131), so Bruce had a TSH test done for that on Friday. We got the results today ~ instead of having hypothyroidism, Bruce has hyperthyroidism! He always has been one to be different! *grin* It's only slight though, so it's not really a concern.

You might remember that Bruce's magnesium levels were low, so he was put on a prescription for magnesium. Well, we got a phone call from his onc's office today. Despite the magnesium pills and a high magnesium diet, Bruce's magnesium has continued to drop, so he has to start taking an extra pill each day. He'll now be taking 1200 mg a day!

Last, but not least, Bruce has a spot in his right lung. He's having a PET Scan done on Wednesday, to see if it's malignant.

I promise to be better about keeping you updated about all these bumps in the road!

We received an e-mail from Bruce's onc, Dr. Castro. The PET scan was negative! *grin* Although the radiologist cautioned that the sensitivity of the test is somewhat limited for small lesions, this is still definitely good news!

I'd like to encourage everyone to support the Beads of Hope necklace project. I'd also like to thank Jess for getting this project off of the ground, and for the hard work she's putting into organizing it.

Bruce had blood work done today. Everything was up a tiny bit!
