February 2004 Updates Sunday, February 01, 2004
Happy February everyone!
Although the calendar says February is the shortest month of the year, living in the north country, I find that it usually feels like the LONGEST month of the year!...But, I do love February anyway, because it's a month of celebration for Bruce & me.
It was 18 years ago this month that Bruce was diagnosed with stage 4 follicular small-cleaved cell NHL, and he's still here to experience another cold & snowy February! :)

Despite the 1.5 million people who went to Boston today, to watch the parade for the Boston Patriots, we made it to Bruce's appointment with the lymphoma specialist on time. And, despite the snow storm we're having here, we made it back home safely this evening.
The lymphoma specialist's recommendation was that Bruce have 4 treatments of Rituxan to control his lymphoma, and then an allogeneic (donor type) bone marrow transplant. I can't say we're thrilled with the prospect of an allo. bmt and all the risks involved, but I have to admit we were expecting that to be the recommendation.
We'd like to thank the members of our church for covering the expenses of our trip to Boston. We'd also like to express a special thank you to our friends, Ted & Cheri and Linda & Dave, for all of their emotional support and physical assistance.

Bruce had an appointment with his onc yesterday and our decision is to hold off on starting Rituxan for a bit longer, while Bruce's onc looks into something for us. It's a long-shot, but Bruce might have a different treatment option.

Bruce's onc tried to get Bruce a vaccine under "compassionate use". We learned today that the answer is no. That's the answer we were expecting, but of course, we're still disappointed...Bruce has to call his onc's office on Monday, to let them know what day he wants to start Rituxan.
We're still waiting to learn who Bruce's best bone marrow donor might be. His parents just got tested this past week, so it'll be a couple of more weeks until we have all those results.
