Bruce's Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Story

Wednesday, May 02, 2001
Bruce had a doctor's appointment today and his WBC is higher than the last time, but for some reason his platelet count & his RBC are down a little. Not enough to be worrisome though. No enlarged lymph nodes could be felt, so he's still in remission. Yeah! He'll be having CT scans done May 21st.

Bruce is still fatigued, but otherwise he's feeling great. He's regained almost all of his lost weight!

We're currently busy preparing for a wedding. Our daughter Chrissy, who had just turned 5 when Bruce was diagnosed with NHL, is getting married May 19th. Bruce will be walking her down the aisle! :-)

A 34 year old father learns that he won't live to see his little girl grow up.
A 5 year old child learns that her Daddy is going to die soon.

What do they look like 15+ years later? Photos of Bruce walking Chrissy down the aisle on her wedding day, and of them dancing together at her wedding reception, will be added soon!

Oops!! It finally happened!!

For the past 15+ years, every time Bruce was scheduled to have CT scans done, we both felt apprehensive and nervous about them. Even when Bruce was in a remission and we had no reason to suspect that the cancer was back! However, yesterday he was supposed to have CT scans and blood work done, but we both forgot all about the appointments! He'll have the blood work done today instead, and the scans have been rescheduled for June 1st. Someone want to send us a reminder notice a few days before then? :-)

When Bruce was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, we were told that he could die within a month, and at most he probably only had 2 years to live. Our youngest daughter, Chrissy, had just turned 5 years old when Bruce was diagnosed. She grew up with the fear of losing her father.

Many times over the years Chrissy would remind Bruce, "Remember Daddy! You promised me that you'll still be here to walk me down the aisle on my wedding day, and to dance the father/daughter dance with me at my wedding reception!". Although neither would admit it to each other, there were times when they both questioned whether the promise could or would be fulfilled.

However, on Saturday, May 19, 2001, Bruce kept the long-standing promise to his little girl! Fifteen plus years after his diagnosis, he walked our daughter Chrissy down the aisle. And, as they danced together to the song "Butterfly Kisses", tears flowed from the eyes of both of them. Also from the eyes of everyone else in attendance!

The photos are here!
