THE METABOLIC RATE

Basal Metabolic Rate

Your Basal Metabolic rate or BMR is a measure of how fast your body is burning off calories. It is at is simplest the amount of calories your body requires to keep your heart pumpimng, your lungs breathing, and basically all other body functions working while your body is at rest.

How to calculate your BMR

A Womans BMR = 663 + (4.38 x Weight in Pounds) + (4.33 x Height in Inches) - (4.7 x Age)

A Mans BMR = 67 + (6.25 x Weight in Pounds) + (12.7 x Height in Inches) - (6.9 x Age)

If you are used to working in kilograms and centimetres then calculate your weight in pounds and your height in inches by using the formula below:

1 Kg = 2.2 lbs (so to find out your weight in pounds mutiply your weight in Kilos by 2.2.
1 Inch = 2.54 Cm ( so to find your height in inches divide your height in Centimetres by 2.54.

As previously mentioned the sum you get from that calculation is your BMR (the amount of calories your body requires to keep it functioning at rest). You must also take in to account that anyone who participates in excercise or any other activity must consume more calories in order to keep their body wieght the same.

There are 2 very simple truths to losing and gaining weight:

If you wish to gain weight you must consume more calories than your body requires
If you wish to lose weight you must consume less than your body requires

You must not forget to take into account any other activites that you do which will increase your BMR. Below is a list of different types of people ranging from the inactive to the very active. You must mutiply your BMR by the number given below to find how many calories your body requires each and every day to keep your weight the same

If you are inactive and do very little or no excercise (1.2)

If you are inactive but have the occasional walk to the shops or do the gardening, car washing etc (1.3)

If you are moderately active and excercise on average 2 to 3 times a week (1.5)

If you are active and excercise regularly and move around a lot through out the day (1.73)

If you excercise more than 5 times a week and move around a lot(1.9)

If you are an extremelly active individual and excercise on a daily basis (2.0)

Remember to keep in mind that this is only a way to estimate how fast your body burns calories and is by no means a complete and 100% accurate description. If you wish to gain weight you must total the amount of calories your body burns each day and then consume more than this total. On the other hand to lose weight you must consume less than this total figure you have reached. One thing that you should not do is reduce or increase this amount by a large amount each day. More than 500-700 is defintely enough.

Your metabolism affects your ability to lose weight. A high metabolism makes it much easier to burn off excess body fat and lose wieght more easily than a person with a slower metabolic rate who finds it much easier to put on extra weight and in particular gain alot of body fat.
