about Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

What is the subconscious

The Subconscious is the seat of the emotions. The part of the brain associated with this is the amygdala. Emotional events go straight into the brain through this part. The speed you can react to a dangerous event may be the few seconds needed to escape. The subconscious also regulates such processes as the flight or fight response, which is usually stress induced (a growling dog, screeching tires), and also controls the autonomic nervous system which keeps your heart beating, lungs breathing, kidneys and liver functioning, hormones balanced etc.

Brain waves associated with the subconscious are around alpha and lower, about 7 Hz and slower.

How is it different than the conscious

We know this as the seat of the logical. We live here ... what shall we wear to work, make for breakfast, where do the kids need to be picked up, remember dry cleaning, need milk, doctors appointment at 4 ... many things to remember and decide.

The conscious jogs along at the beta level, or around 24 Hz.

    brain wave activity
    beta
    24 - 14 Hz
    normal
    alpha
    14 - 7 Hz

    theta
    7 - 3 Hz

    delta
    3 - <0 Hz
    deep sleep

    0
    dead
    conscious

    levels of the mind

Your therapist will bring your mind into the subconscious range, Alpha is best for most therapy or hypnotic suggestion. For surgery lower theta is best. Delta may be too deep as you may fall asleep, even still your conscious is aware. At night you may be aware that your pet is restless or your child is crying, or a strange noise may alert you that something is happening.

Why are most people out of touch with it [subconscious]

Imagine Hz as being Mph, or Kph. When the conscious jogs along at 24 Hz and the subconscious plods at 7 Hz, will they have much time to talk while passing? And if they are heading in the same direction do they speak at all?

What is hypnosis

    Official definition

Hypnosis is an educational communication process to a person's mind that allows the conscious and subconscious to come together and believe the same message.

During hypnosis the body and conscious mind are in a relaxed neutral state while the subconscious remains awake and receptive to suggestion.

Hypnosis is a relaxed, normal, natural, state of mind. We enter this state several times during the day. While daydreaming, watching TV or reading a book. While driving your car, all of a sudden you notice you are almost at your destination and you wonder where the time went! Time flies when you are having fun, or being occupied. These are all altered states of mind. When you fall asleep you pass through all the states, or hope to.

One final time, during a fright time seems to go in slow motion, the emotion level bypasses the logical and goes straight through the amygdala into the subconscious. This is how phobias can be set up.

How does the subconscious accept hypnotic suggestions

When the conscious is relaxed, and keeping watch, the subconscious accepts suggestion. The conscious logically works through thoughts, ideas, suggestions and accepts or rejects these. Even during hypnosis, if a suggestion is not kosher then it will not be allowed in.

Think of a jingle or tag line of any brand named product. Guess what? They got you! When emotions are low and repetition is high the suggestion or thought is in. Inversely, emotions high, it takes only one time (repetitions low).

NB: This can happen to small children. Before the age of about 7 there is no capacity for judgement. Their subconscious is wide open to anything being said or done in their presence. When they grow up it keeps hypnotherapists in work! This is the prime use of regression therapy. Going back in time to find where a belief was established, releasing or reworking it for the adult. -- Please, never tell a small child they are stupid or any other derogatory remark, especially when you are angry. The more emotion attached ... the deeper it goes.

Does a hypnotized person give up control

When watching a stage show you would think the person has no control. You may be right. Not because the hypnotist took it but because the subject gave it away!

Even though your conscious is relaxed it is still vigilant. Like falling asleep at night, you are still aware and consciously monitoring your environment for unknown or warning sounds.

The suggestions being given by the hypnotist is being monitored as well. You may give over a small amount of the control but you still have the last say. At any time you hear a suggestion you dislike then tell your therapist. They can omit it or reword it for you.

Would you pay for a cruise and then spend your holiday in the wheel house making sure the captain is sailing the ship right? As long as the ship is sailing smoothly you would let the captain do their job while you sit back and relax. If something is not right you can get vocal about it.

How does it feel

Some people feel light and airy when they relax, others feel heavy. If you feel the need to move or scratch your nose ... Do it! When you are done you will relax to even deeper levels. If you've had a massage you know what it feels like.

How do you induce hypnosis

During the initial interview I determine your communication style. Information to our minds are gathered through our five senses. Like being right or left handed, you are dominant in one or two of your senses. You still have the use of the others but they are less important to you.

Once this is determined I use your communication style to help you relax. Once you are relaxed there are several ways to induce hypnosis, but with out your trust none will work.

What are the qualifications of hypnotists

A hypnotist can be certified after 50 hours of training, a hypnotherapist needs 100 hours. This is so with the 3 organizations I belong to. I am a certified clinical hypnotherapist because I had 300 hours of training and a degree in any health related field.

To maintain our standing we also need to meet annual levels of improvement or education. This can range from 20 - 30 hours. We can achieve these hours by reading or spending time educating the public or doing research. Each country, state or province has their own requirements, just as each organization does.

I am certified for Canada, associated on an international level.

Is this under regulations

At this time in Canada this industry is self regulated. Just as the psychiatric industry is. The peers determine the levels of training and the code of ethics adopted.

Does it work with everyone

If you have an average level of intelligence, you trust your hypnotist, and you want to be hypnotized. Then it will work. If anyone tells you that you are unhypnotizable, question their training, perhaps they are not adept enough to help you.

What is self hypnosis

All hypnosis is self hypnosis. The basic tools are suggestion and imagination. A therapist aids, guides, helps you to get started, you then learn to do it yourself.

What makes hypnosis unique in helping people

Anyone who has been in counseling or therapy with a psychologist or psychiatrist knows how long and arduous a process this can be. There are those who have been in therapy for so long they have learned the tricks and may even analyze their analyst. I call this process the dance around the mulberry bush, round and round, never getting at the root.

This is because your logical, conscious mind, has walls and barriers up. The emotional hurts and pains are safely tucked away so you can function at a certain level. It may not be optimum but it is fairly comfortable. Until something triggers the pain and you fly into a reactive state; anger, guilt, fear, ...

Hypnotherapy helps you relax the logical mind, it is still vigilant, and allows the subconscious to present it's side of your story. The subconscious is about emotions. It makes sense to work through the emotions with the side that is in charge.

Once the desired state is achieved there is a whole tool box available, through your hypnotherapist, to help remove, rework, restore the emotional levels that allow you to have the power and control over your life that you want to achieve.

What areas do you use hypnosis to help people

If it involves the mind, and / or emotions, hypnosis can help. As your mind is in control of your body, that connection needs to be sound and debris free for optimum health levels.

Hypnosis can help you learn to use your mind for your benefit, learn new habits to replace old ones. It can help you to control pain, speed healing, eradicate allergies and other auto-immune disorders. It can bring your inner physician online, boosting your immune system.

Do you need to control your emotions? No control needed if they have been worked through and only the positive emotions are left. Some people chronically pick out the worst things about their lives to focus on, we help them to see the silver lining behind those storm clouds. This will help you overcome depression.

We can also regress you to remove careless statements made by the adults in your childhood. Remember, no judgement before 7 years old. We can also help you learn how to reparent yourself. A happy, healthy child becomes a happy, healthy adult.

There are many more uses, see ...

How does it help? [I]s it permanent?

With the right therapist you learn how to take your power back. Victims have had their control removed. Doctors hand you medication and sometimes little hope of getting well. Emotions control you no matter how logical you are, in a war between logic and emotion, which usually wins? Triggers send you reeling from one reaction to the next.

Take back your power, take back control! Learn how to help yourself. Triggers that have been disconnected no longer work. Attitudes have been changed. You are now the master of your own destiny. If you choose to give your power away at a future date then that is your privilege. But at least you know that is was yours to give.

Give us an example of helping someone remember a childhood trauma that is affecting their current life

I helped a woman with several degrees. She had worked her way up the ladder to finally accept a position of responsibility. Her world came crashing down around her ears within weeks. Her mental stability was in question and she then spent 10 years on disability.

She came in for hypnotherapy for depression. When we regressed her we found the statement, "you should never be responsible for anybody or anything!" A very angry step-aunt was reprimanding her for an accident where her step-brother had gotten run over by his father. The baby never had a chance and his 8 year old sister now had to live with the guilt. The father's sisters could not blame him but they could attack his step-daughter.

This statement lay dormant until she had earned a position of responsibility many years later. That one word was her undoing. She had forgotten the statement as it had hurt so much and it was buried deep and forgotten.

This event was tied to the depression but the source needed more regression. We ended up in a past life for that source.

Is it recognized by health insurance

Unfortunately, at this time hypnosis is not recognized by provincial health plans. There are some private plans that will fund it, check your policy or ask your insurance agent.

Can it be dangerous

The worst thing that may happen to you would be that you fall asleep during the session and later wake feeling as refreshed as you would have from an afternoon's nap.

If there are any unwanted suggestions they will be "slept" off in a couple of days. We are also cautioned when working with pain not to remove the pain totally. The pain is an indication that something is wrong with the body. Removing the pain entirely allows more damage to be done. Similar to taking a pain killer or injection for a sore knee and then continuing to play football. Many players have been lost this way. The benefit of the team came before the player and the player loses out totally.

I have witnessed a post hypnotic suggestion go wrong. A stage hypnotist suggested a subject fall deeply asleep when a certain word was said. During his show he used that word but failed to determine where and what the subject was doing. The subject had gone to the washroom, as soon as the word was spoken there was a crash heard from the area of the men's room. The subject needed several stitches to close the gash left by the sink as he fell to the floor.

How do you feel about its use in entertainment

Besides the antics and disrespect shown some of the subjects, hardly a benefit to one's self esteem, the show can be proof of how powerful the subconscious can be. Some of the subjects have truly wonderful imaginations shivering in the heat and sweating in the cold.

I particularly like the hypnotists that do the stiff as a board routine. Implanting the suggestion that the subject is rigid and stiff as a board, or piece of steel, the person can then be suspended between two chair backs or hung by their neck while someone holds their heels. An amazing and powerful object lesson.

If the audience would just take a moment to think about how our minds can control our bodies.

How do you select someone that you feel trust with

    As a client ask yourself a few questions;

      • Do you feel comfortable with this therapist?
      • Do they understand what you are requesting?
      • Are they answering your questions to your satisfaction?
      • Have you asked how much training they have achieved?
      • Have you seen their certification?

There is no end to the list, do and ask what you need to in order to make your decision.

Can anyone learn hypnosis

Anyone can learn to hypnotize themselves. It is matter of conditioning. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Like learning to tie your shoe or write your name, eventually you become adept enough you no longer need to think about doing it. Anything done often enough will be relegated to the subconscious.

What is the history of exploring the subconscious through hypnosis

How do you deal with skeptics

For a believer no proof is needed.

For a skeptic no proof is enough.

It is not up to me to change another person's mind. I can only present the evidence that helped me change mine. They can then accept or reject that evidence, or perhaps file it for later when the evidence has built enough to hit the critical threshold to tip the balance.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It is the differing opinions that make this an interesting world. We can always agree to disagree.

What is past life therapy

Past life therapy is part of regression therapy. As a therapist I leave the time or era up to the subconscious by asking open ended questions like, return to the event that caused this pain, or set up this belief, ... This way we catch where the damage began. If it was in this life, great! But sometimes it began in another life.

In the above therapy for depression (review) the initial event was in a past life. The utter sadness this woman had experienced her whole life was a result of the death of her daughter in a past life. Her guilt over questions such as, "did I get the doctor soon enough?" "Did I administer the medicine properly?" "Did I ... ?" "Did I ... ?" "Did I ... ?"

The daughter died at age 6 and mom was grief stricken for the rest of her life, even though she had a son several years later. She could never delight in her little boy as the grief and guilt were always present.

We learned that one of her lessons for this life was to learn from the grief and let it go. Letting go of loved ones was also difficult for her, she became so needy and held those she loved in an emotional strangle hold. We worked through these issues and she was then free to love others and her needs no longer drove people away.

It was also learned that the son and daughter in the past life were now her mother and the baby brother she lost, in this life. A prime example of soul mates in action. Those spirits that travel with you in order to help you learn those most important lessons while here in this life.

What is your explanation of this :

Some would say that hypnosis is simply a matter of having an especially vivid imagination or the result of inducing the phenomenon of multiple personality through hypnosis

A vivid imagination is usually responsible for phobias and other "stinkin' thinkin'." The things you create in your mind are the things you want your body or your life to accomplish. If your imagination is getting you all the things you don't want then try another tack. Your hypnotherapist can help you retrain your thought processes so that you imagine the positive aspects you want present in your life. Successful people use a vivid imagination to help them achieve their goals and cancer patients can even use theirs to battle their illness!

As for multiple personality. There is a disorder of such. Imagine a hologram that has suffered a trauma. If the hologram is cracked you see two persons that are the same. This is termed dissociative personality disorder. They feel separate from the other part.

Now shatter that hologram and you have a distinct personality in each piece, term this multiple personality. The original piece rarely knows of the other pieces until they get triggered by an event similar to the first traumatic event. Then the "host" experiences time loss as the chard was in control of the body and mind during that time.

We do use something similar in parts therapy. Ever had a situation where one part of you wants to go to a party but another part prefers to stay home? We use that. We discuss things with the part that is causing the problem and then get them to agree to take on another role or achieve their goal in a healthier way. No fear, we do put you back together again by the end of the session.

Some would claim that the hypnotist inject suggestions through their questions

Sometimes we do implant suggestions. That is part of the therapy to set up new habits for old.

A line of questioning that leads to a particular answer can easily be done. If the hypnotists wants a certain outcome, such as UFO abductees, then they may use their questions to lead the subject to a certain conclusion.

As a hypnotherapist we are trained to guide our clients. Guiding helps you find the answers you are looking for. It does not help you to find my answers.

What are some past life memories that you have experienced with people

There was a young lady who came in to find out if she could discover where she had known someone she was very attracted to. The emotion was so strong and she could not understand it. As they were both married to other people the situation could cause a problem. The regression ended up in a past life where the other person and her were twin brothers. The era was during WWI. One brother became a soldier and the person regressed was a pilot. This pilot was a regular barn-stormer taking many chances which eventually got him killed.

The woman then invited the attractee to come in for a regression but told him nothing of our findings. When asked if he believed in past lives he proceeded to tell us of a vivid dream he had experienced repeatedly when he was younger. He was a soldier following a track when a tank comes up behind him and runs him over. He found the dream rather distressing.

I proceeded to regress him and we found the life in the dream. He had a twin brother who was a pilot, unfortunately his risk taking got him killed early in the war. He, himself, was serving as a soldier. We got to the point where the tank comes up behind him and his fear level rose. This was the point in his dream where he woke in cold sweats. I helped him through the entire event. His death and the resulting peace was the high point of his regression.

The dream, or memory, had been completed for him and it no longer troubled him. In fact, he enjoys remembering the peace and tranquility upon his death! So much so, he has come back for several more regressions. He now calls himself a Regression Junky!

As for the strong attraction - the love of twin brothers! What could be stronger?

There are skeptics that say it is suggested or a memory of a movie or another person. How do you respond to these skeptics

No matter what comes through the main question you should ask yourself is how does this information help?

There are those schools of thought that suggest we put together parts of the movies or books we've read, or information from history classes. These people must be very creative to write such a script. There are those who think we dip into a pool of the sum total of all existence and take out what we need at the time. Perhaps, it was another life you had lived? It is up to you to decide what it is you believe or have experienced.

We work with your belief system to achieve your goals, especially when it comes to the therapy aspect of past life regression.

Some believe in reincarnation, others don't. If it is true why hasn't this been more convincing for everyone.

Reincarnation boils down to societal beliefs. If your friends and neighbours tell you this is ridiculous then you may adopt their beliefs.

In other societies and cultures the reincarnation aspect is a part of their beliefs. In India if you mention memories from a past life, if the family has the where with all, they may help you find your family in a past life. Other religious doctrines have reincarnation well established as a part of the accepted view. The only religion I can think of that does not have reincarnation established is the Christian one. But even then, they believe that John the Baptist was Elijah reincarnated. There are other verses, in the Bible, that point to living other lives. View some of them here ... Bible verses

almost all children under the age of 10, spontaneously recall events of alleged past lives, have you witnessed this

I have both witnessed and experienced this. I have remembered many lives, until I was told I was being silly and should not speak like that. I was a very compliant child. Later in my adult life I began removing these imposed beliefs and now enjoy remembering once again.

How can events or memories from a past life affect people in this life?

In the case of love at first sight the problem may be a ruined marriage as mentioned earlier (review) or the guilt from a past life destroying this life with depression. (review) There have been other cases where a fatal wound can cause medical problems in this life, or even set up a belief system that is difficult to overcome. One case of obesity was a result of starving to death in a past life and the resolution not to go hungry ever again!

If the memories or beliefs are positive then they may add a benefit to this life. Understanding yourself at such a level can be enlightening!

What are the warning signs of frauds in this service

Either your hypnotist has the ability to work with you or they don't. As long as you don't give your power away, such as stage subjects, then you are in total control. Ask all the questions you need to be comfortable with the person you will be working with.(review)

I'm not sure how fraud can be committed. I have read about cases where hypnosis has be blamed for rape and traffic accidents. I think the courts were not well informed. Even books, tv and radio hypnotizes us. How do we protect ourselves from that?

    Knowledge!
