Swiss "Info-Bits" Cat's Claw |
Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a woody vine typically two to three inches in diameter which can reach over 100 feet in length. Principally found in Peru, it grows at elevations of 700-2,500 meters. the descriptive name Cat's Claw (Una de Gato) has been given to this species due to the hook-like thorns that appear on the outer stems of the vines.
As has been the case with Ginseng in the Orient, Cat's Claw in South America has been thought to be the panacea and cure for a number of ailments, some of which include: ulcers, gastritis, rheumatism, pre-menstrual cycle irregularities, cancer, arthritis and organic depression. Laboratory research has been conducted on this plant since the latter part of the 1980's, primarily in south America, England, Hungary and Italy. It is one of the plants currently being researched by the National Institute of Health as a possible anti-cancer agent.
