EDITORIAL

The end of the year is looming just over the horizon and so is my departure from the role of Editor of Huntington’s News.  I can’t actually remember how long I have been at the helm, around two years I think, and what a lot I have learnt in that time.  It has been an interesting and rewarding experience and I have had the opportunity to get to know and have contact with some remarkable and very interesting people.  I continue to be impressed by the commitment and care of people involved with HD – carers, health professionals and those who have the disease.  It continually renews one’s faith in human nature.

In the past few months HD has had a very high profile nationally – we had the spin-off from Neurological Week promotions and as a result, the lead article and cover story in Canvas magazine (which comes out with Saturday’s Herald newspaper) was on HD.  A comprehensive article covering many aspects – well written, and comments I have heard suggest that it has clarified things for people who are not directly involved.  Good positive publicity like that is difficult to buy and does so much in raising awareness.

Glenys Shepherd, who is from the Wellington area, will be taking over from me for the March issue.  Her email address is info.wellingtonhda@xtra.co.nz if you want to make contact with her for the next issue.  I would like to thank everyone who has helped me during my time as Editor and wish Glenys every success.  We have begun to receive unsolicited contributions from readers and it would be good to see that continue and increase.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and trust that you have time to rest and enjoy the summer in the company of family and friends.

Regards

Mary
