For me the Bible is like an "Owners Manual". It didn't come with the "new product" at birth, but it has been available for hundreds of years. It contains the instructions on how to make my life work. And best of all, it was written especially for me. But guess what ? It was also written especially for YOU!
"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness: that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Peace Within Yourself
I have found the following verses to be especially comforting.
Even during the darkest times of my depression.
This first passage was given to me by a pastor many years ago when I was first diagnosed with depression. He suggested that I memorize it by writing it down several times in a row each day for a week. At that time I thought that would be impossible for me to accomplish. But I did it and it worked. I was able to remember the verse and say it out loud which is exactly what I did.
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
Because of this promise from God, I have been able to have a peace in my heart that on my own would be impossible. There have been situations in my life that would have been totally devastating if I'd had to face them by myself. The stress would be overwhelming and I would be a "basket case" if I didn't have the supernatural PEACE that God provides.
Notice that the verse promises God's peace will guard our hearts and MINDS. The first time I realized this it was such a relief. God knows that my mind needs to be at peace. And he provides a way for me to get that peace !
When We Don't Understand Our Circumstances
Sometimes there just aren't answers to all of the "why's" in our live's. Even God doesn't explain everything to us. There are some things that we as human beings aren't capable of understanding about God in this lifetime. It is comforting to know that one day, when we are with our Father in heaven where everything imperfect disappears, then we will understand.
"Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror dimly lit; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then shall I know fully, even as I am fully known." 1 Corinthians 13:12
