Trail Running in Orange County

Lower Newport Bay
Description
This is basically a non-off-roading, asphalt paved bike trail
which
has some great scenery. It's hard to believe this kind of
scenery
exists so close to everything else which surrounds it.
Lower Newport Bay basically will run parallel to Jamboree. It
starts near
University/Bristol and ends near PCH/Fashion Island.
On the trail you will find:
- Steep steep cliffs on one side of the trail
- Lots and Lots of water with lots of birds/ducks on the other
side
- Possible closures and debris in the road from the rain
- mostly older asphalt surface losing its cushion..sub-optimal
dirt path available
- Porta-Potty in the middle (smack dab)
- VERY CLOSE to Fashion Island!!!
Directions
It's easiest to park at Fashion Island and then walk it..
I have included where the Upper
Newport Trail and Irvine Bike Trail
are in relation to the Lower Newport Trail for your reference
Via 405 South
- exit 55/73 South.. (before SouthCoast Plaza) Stay on
the 73 Freeway
- Exit right (towards beach) on Jamboree
- Continue, past EastBluff...you will come to the top
of a
hill with a gas station on the right.. keep going
- The next light , on the left, you will see a
monument
describing that you are near Fashion Island. Take this
left
- Keep Going... you will eventually see a parking
garage
up on the left.. park here
- Get out of the car and go back to Jamboree... go
left
and you will soon see the Hyatt Newporter hotel
- Shortly after this hotel you will see the bay club
on
your right... Go this way. follow the curvy road to the
end
and that's where the Lower Newport Bay starts
Via 405 North
- exit Jamboree, going left (towards beach)..then same as
above
via PCH
- get off on Jamboree, turn left (inland)..
- After passing the Hyatt Neworter, at the top of the
hill
on the right you will see an entrance to Fashion Island
- the rest is the same as above
Where to Run?
Basically, this is an out and back. It will continue all along
the bay (the ducks will keep you company). It will go all the
way
until you reach this steep hill (about 100 feet?). At the top
that
is pretty much where the trail ends.
Congrats!! You've run about 3.8 to 4 miles! now run back
*smile*
If you want more running, then as you exit, go left to
Jamboree..
Then left on jamboree. You will come to a split in the path
Go left, and the trail goes under Jamboree.. This is the start
of
(for lack of a name) the Irvine Bike Trail (another trail
described
elsewhere on this page).
Stay on the sidewalk, and continue until you get to the
intersection
shared with the Mercedes Dealership. look to the left and
you'll
see another trail! This is the Upper Newport Bay trail (also
described
elsewhere on this page)
P.S. No Brush problems or rattle snake problems i gather..but
lots of
people enjoy this trail on the weekend so it may be a bit
crowded
