*****CHILDREN'S TITLES*****
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
By Judith Viorst.
This is one of the best children's books I have ever used - it lets children know that things are going to be bad at times, but that things usually work out all right in the end...if you have a sense of humor. During Story Time, after reading about all the outlandish things that happen to Alexander, I usually asked the children to think about something they experienced that made it a "...Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" for them and then draw it for me. This way they didn't try to outdo each other by telling wilder and wilder anecdotes, and yet it helped them remember how they overcame a bad day. I would also draw a picture. Sometimes the results were very surprising. Since I worked in a school, I then would ask if they minded if I put the artwork on the Bulletin Board for a few days - most of the time, they didn't mind.
