[Just Say No! to Microsoft®]

Anti-Microsoft Propaganda

Why an Anti-Microsoft page? Increasingly, I've noticed the good of such a page as this isn't inherently obvious to many people, so I'm forced to offer a rationale for this page's existence.

First, anything that is as wildly popular and dominant as Microsoft is needs to have naysayers in order to force the duck people into situations where they might have to think. It's also necessary to provide alternatives to those who don't want to just fall in line with the Insect God Profit, Microsoft.

Second, Microsoft's wild popularity and wide-spread use isn't based on anything noble, such as, the superiority of their product, but rather is often evidence of some of the worst aspects of human nature.

For example, Microsoft's business practices over the years have hardly been anything, but fair or honest. Microsoft more often ripped off good ideas from other people or bought a company out, than come up with real innovations of their own.

Also, the skyrocketing sales of products such as Windows 95 have more due to with the Rolling Stones & slick full-pages ads than anything such as technical superiority of the product. Micro$oft has successfully expounded the myth that there is a lack of any alternatives (how many vendors do you know of, off hand, that don't assume that you want either Windows 95 or Windows NT pre-loaded on your machine? I know of one and the the third alternative is MS-DOS 6.22 with Windows for Workgroups -- some choice). Often, this is not due to ignorance on the part of the software/hardware vendors, but rather is all part of a concerted effort to penalize those people who would demand a non-Microsoft product on their new machines. There are even reports that vendors such as Toshiba have stated that the loading of an operating system other than Windows 95 would void the hardware warranty!

I would say that the majority of end-users go along with the Microsoft juggernaut not because they have researched the literature and consequently concluded that Microsoft products best fulfill their computer needs, but instead what one hears is the lowing of the Nietzschian herd -- everyone else is doing it. They have bought into the lie that since Microsoft is the de facto "industry standard" if they buy non-MS products they will lose compatibility with the rest of the world. This is an ignorant view-point and ignores the fact that it's Microsoft's unwillingness to submit to industry standards (such as with HTML and Java) that leads to such incompatibilities.

I do understand that many people, when purchasing new computer systems, have little choice as to what software is loaded onto their machine. This is wrong, and flies in the face of the primary principle of a free-market capitalist system, namely, consumer choice. I also understand that many people like Microsoft's products, believing they are excellent (maybe even the best). We're all entitled to differing opinions. Read this stuff with an eye of skepticism and reply if you have anything to say. The more scathing the better.
