Dutch Apple Bread

Ingredients:

1/2 cup shortening, no butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup coarsely chopped apples, peeled
1/2 cup coasely chopped nuts, optional
2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sour milk
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

Cream the shortening and sugar until smooth, add the eggs and beat until well mixed. Add the chopped apples and mix, then add the flour and beat well. Mix together the sour milk and the baking soda and add to the batter. Add in the salt and vanilla and beat. Divide the dough into two 4 x 8 inch greased loaf pans. Top with a mixture of 2 tablepsoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes. When using nuts, they should be added along with the apples.
