Rote Gruetze

A traditional German dessert that is best when all the berries are fresh and in season, but is delicious at any time of year.

Ingredients:

2 cups cherries, pitted
2 cups strawberries
2 cups red or black currants
1 box of frozen mixed berries
2 Tblsp lemon juice
1 Tblsp corn starch
at least 2 cups sugar
2 tsp ground coriander

Mix all the ingredients together and then bring the mixture to a boil over moderate heat. When the mixture boils, reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Remove from the heat and let the mixture firm up. After about 15 minutes, transfer to a serving bowl and cool further in the refrigerator. The dessert may be eaten as is or with a custard topping.
